Duel Approved

A loose definition of portrait would be a verbal picture or description of a person, his appearance and character as shown by a painter or a photographer...

If we were to go by this definition, your above examples of self portrait fall outside this sphere.

I am approving this as of now hoping this develops constructively.

I'm sorry but I feel that both of my pictures DO fall under the 'self portrait' category.
Quoting wikipedia : Wiki link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-portrait)
'Two methods of obtaining photographic self-portraits are widespread. One is photographing a reflection in the mirror, and the other photographing one's self with the camera in an outstretched hand.'

The first pic is obviously my reflection in a mirror and the second one was shot using the 5 second timer and the camera was rested on a pile of books (my cheap idea of a tripod :p)
Though if you guys find the thread inappropriate, feel free to delete it :)

Agreed. But that above could very well be Dawood Ibrahim photographing himself. I wish you read the whole thing that is written at wiki instead of quoting in part. Also check "portrait". What I am trying to say is that in no way is your appearance apparently visible to show a "portrait". I am not too sure who can term it as such other than near and dear ones who know you like the back of your hand which is what is visible.

At least I have not seen too many portraits of people where no facial features are visible!

Note: I am not saying the photograph is bad. I am only saying that I would not call it a portrait.

Vicky, finally I get to see the man behind the beautiful pics!

Correct.

I manually zoomed the flash head to 105mm. Pointed it towards the back of a chair which is not visible in the frame and hung a crumpled white handkerchief on the chair to bounce back the light softly:)
