People have a reptile fetish here it seems. Love them and terrified of them at the same time. Liked the green snake with the bulging penetrative eye.

Can we have more details on "catch light" please? Thanks.

Catch light is a small spec of white light on the Subjects Eye, which will enhance the eye contact with the subject and adds to the photographic value of the shot.

Go thro the archives...and check the eye of wildlife and also in portrait section check the small spec of light in the eyes...it make a lot of impact with and without the CATCH LIGHT...!!

In portrait and studio environment its easy to get catch light in the subjects eye...b'cos its a controlled condition...

where as in Wildlife...the situation is very difficult...and if you mange to get the Catch light...it definitely adds to the value of the photograph and effort of the photographer...!!

I hope I have conveyed the message...

Vicky, nice implants..:)

Honestly I did not want to mention the implant of "CATCH LIGHT" thro PS.. as it may offend some....in my previous reply to Kris...

But getting it naturally in wildlife pic. is a big circus in the field conditions...

There are some interpretable shapes to the left. But one is generally tended to look at the overexposed leaves in the top centre of the photograph where I cannot make out any "living" object other than leaves! Have been staring at this photograph for the past half hour...

Thanks Vicky!

Three reasons :)

1. The lens used is the 100-400 L at 400 mm, so f9 to be in its "sweet spot"
2. Tried couple of shots with lower shutter speeds (1/200 -1/250) with IS on, but there was a slight blur, hence had to got to ISO 1600 to get 1/400.
3. The 20D ISO jumps in steps of 1 ev :(

I do not wholly agree with your views about POTN. Agreed that the shot you posted by Steve is really very good. But some of the photographs posted here can actually match up if not better. Remember the eagle shots that you had posted some time back?

@Surya: That is a BRILLIANT shot. I would like to know how did you get such a 'perfect timed' shot. :) Shooting in continuous mode, one would presume? And man, your 100-400L is something that I have been yearning for months now! :)

Aryan, Thanks for the compliment...Its sheer timing for these shots ...I sat for hours on end patiently observing the fishing pattern they adopt...

Its very tiring to be always peeping in the viewfinder...They happen very very fast and any where around you....ANTICIPATION is the key word....!!!

All the shots are hand held .... lying on the ground for those low level shots with insects and bugs crawling around you.....I hardly use the tripod...even tho i carry a Manfrotto..Pro..

There are times, I have missed these actions when I took a loo break or for a sip of water....!!! forget about lunch...:(

Lighting and BG also plays an important role to get a punch in the pic.

I don't do any PP ...they are straight of the CAM...with little adj. for sharpness, brightness and contrast..

Man its so tiring...at the end of the day...But brings back smile when U see them on your comp...

Go, get the 100-400L...its very versatile lens...

Aryan

It's all there in Vicky's signature Tau! He uses a Canon 50D and the two real GOOD lenses - the 70-200 F4L IS and the 400mm f5.6L! :D No wonder then that the bokeh is like butter, and YES that IS the natural bokeh of the lens! ;)
