Hi Guys,...
Just returned from a 7 day wildlife trip- LEOPARD centric to YALA WILDLIFE RESERVE, SRILANKA..

Very memorable and a different kind of forest...shrub jungle on the south east coastline of Srilanka. Strewn with huge rocks and lagoons around, its a perfect habitat of leopards. I could sight 6 Leopards in 10 safaris.

Jungle ride 2 times a day takes the toll on you..but will reward you with one of the most beautiful wildlife experience.

Hot and humid weather conditions....sprinkled with heavy showers occasionally. The forest is like a million puddle puzzle.

Here is one pic. of a Leopard perched in its favorite habitat....late evening shot.

Shrub jungle with rocks and lagoons; sounds like a real strange landscape. Mix of a desert like appearance with lagoons!

Lovely shot!

Leopard-centric tour! That is what I call dedication. When are you going chasing the snow leopard? I am sure you have that one planned out too. :)

Thanks a LOT for sharing this tour with us.

Hi Guys,

This picture of WILD ASS...was shot at LESSER RANN OF KUTCH... It is found only in this part of the world and no where else...!!

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5167/5300189120_e7b70bc96e_b.jpg

Note: the mid ground looks like water...but its not....its the Mirage effect..or also know as false water...It is caused by thermals raising from ground..

This makes it even more difficult to get perfect focus....for the animals which are far and not approachable...

Very tricky to get sharp pictures.....!!

Thanks Kris, Yes, luck plays a vital role in Wild life photography...Only I could get this shot....by the time others could muster their equipment...the beast had gone...its was a show for few seconds...& did not show up for days...!!

Despite all the odds, getting a clean, clear, crisp, composed, catchligt & steady shot...oofff....lot of thing have to come together...

So...RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME, RIGHT EQUIPMENT, PATIENCE & LUCK...:):)

Hi,

These are a couple of pics I've clicked during my travels in the last 2 years.

- The Cougar was clicked at the Toronto Zoo.
- Both lions were spotted in the wild at Masai Mara, Kenya (the most memorable trip ever!!)
- The White Rhino with the calf was at Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya.
- The owl is probably the most recognizable of the birds at Kanha National Park (lives in the tree close to the gate)

Hey Krishnendu,

Sorry about the Exif. These are scaled versions of the originals and I must've lost the exif data when I added the copyright image and saved for the web.

All pictures were clicked with my humble prosumer at super zoom, so I'm sure the quality isn't all that great. I'm an absolute newbie so not sure what you mean when you say they shots would look better if I did USM. Could you please enlighten me? :-)

Hey Payal,

Now I know why the Exif is not showing. It is because it has been saved for web. When a photo is saved for web, the Exif gets stripped! (No issues though, personal choice)

Secondly, USM = Unsharp Mask. It is to make your shots sharper. Several photo editing software do it. I was talking notably about Photoshop though.

Here's something I shot in December last year. For some reason, I prefer this B/W over the colour version.

Ok, let tell you in brief.
In 2009, I and 4 of my friend traveled to Ethiopia for a photo tour. Ethiopia is not famous for wildlife but you can still find some. Our guide insisted that we sail in this large river and go to the other side of the bank to shoot wild life. After sailing for 90 mins we reached the other side but were not allowed to get out of boat due to safety. We were greeted by various birds, crocs. hippos and other wild life. We were not prepared for wild life shoot and hence the longest focal length was 200mm.
http://www.henrydsilva.com/photogallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=3908&g2_serialNumber=1

The boat driver killed the engines and let us shoot. Without making any noise we were happily shooting crocs, hippos and birds. In that excitement non of us realized that our boat was moving slowly very close to the bank.
http://www.henrydsilva.com/photogallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=3881&g2_serialNumber=1

Suddenly, our boat rocked fiercely. One of our colleague saw a croc right under our boat that shook it. Scared he jumped on the other side of the boat. That tilted the boat more and nearly capsized. Lot of water got inside our boat. If the boat had capsized we all had been crocs food for that day. There were nearly 50 huge crocs.

http://www.henrydsilva.com/photogallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=3893&g2_serialNumber=1

Not only that. While returning the river got so rough we could have again capsized. That was scarey.

I know experienced photographers like you who have visited may sanctuaries/jungles may not like wild animals in captive but its good for starters/hobbyists like us. If anyone is looking forward ,I would specially recommend people to reach there before 9:30 to get the first safari bus, better light and beat the maddening crowd.

Another nice picture. I like the composition and the mono tone treatment.
I can notice the childs face is well exposed but the mothers face is dark. You could have used flash to fill the shadows on the face or you could use the local brightness (selecting the face only) while processing in LR or CS.

Did you like the zoo in Zurich? Are the conditions there better than in our country?

I thoroughly enjoyed the Zurich zoo.

However, the only Indian zoo I've been to is the Byculla Zoo in Mumbai, which I didn't like one bit. The animals there are in cages instead of natural-looking enclosures.

Hi Guys,

Good evening,

This image was done at LESSER RANN OF KUTCH, GUJARATH...!!

It was tough to image this...given the circumstances...moving and shaking gypsy at a good speed on a uneven terrain...fixed focal length...running parallel to these speeding mammals.

Framing was a challenge and hand-holding the combo of 300 f2.8 and 1dmk took some effort.
