Hi All,
although i am new to this photography, i was playing around with my camera canon A1100IS p&s ,
i come across option of varying exposure in many preset modes ...for example ..beach..day..sunset
and i also checked the Long shutter option in one of the night preset modes ..
Now my question is :
How Exposure [long and short] different from Long shutter ?
When to use Exposure [long and short] ?
when to use Long shutter [only present in night mode]?
finally one extra question ..
when to use ISO [high & Low] ?

Very valid question....It all boils down to a term called DOF..Depth of field.
The inter play of the 3 components like the shutter speed, aperture, iso will result in perfect exposure and desired DOF.
In p&s they are segmented into different scene mode for ease of use. In advanced cameras they allow the controls to be handled by the skill of the photographer.
Btw. DOF. means the area in-focus in front and back of the subject. Which depends on the subject.
Experts can throw some more light on this.

To add some more info....
My camera .. can vary the exposure , Long shutter and ISO .. manually in some perticular preset modes .. with below details:
exposure - i can vary from +5-0- -5
Long shutter - can vary from 0-15sec
ISO - i can set from 200 to 1600

Sorry for the delayed response....coming to the point...
Exposure of +5-0-(-5)...indicates a decimal increment of a set exposure. Ex. if the set exposure is f4....its can be incremented or decremented on either side of the scale to achieve correct exposure.
Long shutter ...the word means the shutter can be opened to allow the light anywhere upto 15 sec. in order for the sensor to receive light...
ISO... is the sensitivity of the sensor...lower the number less sensitive and U need bright light conditions...Higher the number...more sensitive...but can work in less light....
All the above components in right combination will help in getting good pic. in the given situation...
These are the parameters which control the quantum of light photons reaching the sensor.
Older times and in film days & pure manual cameras...these were the basics which U have to be knowledgeable with to get brilliant pic.
This is the era of Auto mode and fast photography where the basics are give a skip....!!!!
I hope I have answered ur doubts...Go ahead and use these controls in different combo...and see the difference in the final pic.
Good luck and Regards.
