Excellent shot as usual but just two things:

1) I noticed a slight Halo like thing around the girl. Whats that?

2) Whats that long pole like thing to the right side of the girl, is it a depression in the ground?

zwaltek
11-07-2011, 09:51 AM
you are right the halo is caused by the fact that i blew up the fur a bit but did not pay enough attention to the mask. i'll fix it
the "pole" is the print of a tire i guess
thanks

And this time my confession brought smile on these lovely and lively faces.

So I was in my native Ranchi for this Durga Puja. I would say this was the first festival I went to attend to my native after a break of 5 years. Things have changed so much, there seems to be a difference in frequency between me and my fellow native people.
There use to be a 9 days festival during durga puja and on 9th day (Navami), there is a ritual to feed and pray 9 girls of age lesser than 9. They are believed to be the avatar of Goddess Durga.
This ritual is 'religiously' followed at my home as well. My family was having tough time in arranging 9 girls of age lesser than 9. So everyone was busy in arranging them, almost all of my relative (but me) .. In such a chaos, my dad went to a slum and called upon the kids of our household maids etc. On the other hand my other relative were able to get more 'clean' kids.

(Guys please dont get me wrongly, but these are my perception I am penning down. After this incident my parents were at the receiving end from me.)

So where there was a need of 9 kids, we got like 20 of them. And that is where discrimination started to happen. These kids were nicely ignored before the kids of 'well versed' families.
Kids are not fools, these kids pictured below were able to understand whats going on, and one of them (the matured one) got real angry with my family. They started to leave after seeing such an ignorant treatment. All this happened while I was busy with some other chores and later I came to know about these happenings. Firstly, I gave my piece of mind to those who were really ignorant about these kids, and later I had to get into damage control mode.

I went to them, requested, offered sweets. Nothing.
I tried again, told them to have lunch with me. Nothing.
I tried for third time and voila they were ready, but with a low heart. I knew I have a challenge ahead. I told the maids to stay away and took the responsibility of feeding them personally. I had a nice entertaining chat and came to know that one of them is a real good Hockey player at junior school level.

Two of them (9 years old) have not seen school till date.

After them having a sumptuous lunch, those kids seemed to be in a forgiving mode. They were smiling, laughing and above all interacting to me as if they knew me for past many years.
I wanted to do something for them at least for a temporary happiness. Took out my camera and told them to pose for camera.
Man !. You should have seen their happiness when they knew they are getting photographed. I tried to capture their expression here.
Later I bid them a good bye with some stationary and chocolates.
I was surprised to see the happiness those kids showed just by receiving few minutes of love, affection, importance and gifts which in totality does not even cost a pitcher of Beer. Our kids at home would have happily thrown it away and shouted at us.

The matured kid asked me what would she become once she grew up. I told her to study and be a politician, a true politician.

She said she is going to give her best, borrow books from her friend and study hard in FREE TIME while SHE IS NOT WORKING (I am ashamed to say she is a housemaid somewhere in our neighbourhood).
I was angry, unhappy & happy, all the emotions flashed in a second.

Before leaving she said something which I will never forget. She said once she becomes a politician first thing she is going to do is visit me. I tried to hold my emotion but honestly felt like holding that kid into my arms.

Enough of my egotism, these are the shots. ( I took individual portraits of all the kids with their best buddies)

A tighter crop excluding the negative space to the left should enhance the emotions in the image. Nice & sharp.

When I shoot a human being, I prefer having my focus on the most prominent feature of a person... his face! :)

But somehow this works out doesn't it ? I mean agreed that this is not the usual norm, but this just has a different effect to it..
I am curious as to what he was doing with his fingers, so I think a bit bit more depth would have made it better ( atleast for me ). Right now the story just stops abruptly.
But as they say it all about perception, isn't it ?

The second picture is a bit cluttered, lot of distractions.

< I know its easy to comment on how to take a perfect picture than doing it, but don't I get my right of free speech ? :-D >

ummm just a question...is it applicable almost all the time...let us suppose the kid over here is playing with the finger giving it a feel that the kid is in deep thought.agree that can be depicted with the facial expression but if the fingers gives the same feeling of deep though..

its just a general query .

Kenda, I shall have to disagree with you... Its not always necessary to have the face in full focus... Sometimes, you need a different focal point & it adds a different feeling & depth to the images... This is mostly for kids & geriatrics, for others its usually face, unless they've some spectacular movements, that needs to be captured...

its just a general query .

Kaushik, I liked both the images... But, the problem is the composition... In the first a bit more depth was needed, like the nails being in focus with the hands... The second needed a bit more frame area, it is very cluttered right now... Both needed more of the face (child & child-father) being shown in frame...

As for you question, yes you can focus on different areas of the body to depict different feelings & depth... But, when you do that you need to ensure that the frame is not too tight, there is breathing space & the viewer's eye is directed towards the intended focal point...

It is a matter of persistence... and...

...most importantly... your desire to really want to shoot the subject. In that case, you will make your shot no matter what.

It is a matter of persistence... and...

...most importantly... your desire to really want to shoot the subject. In that case, you will make your shot no matter what.

Very well said Kenda.

She was in her playful mood and i was ready with my camera. For children natural expressions are the best. If you ask them to pose they will do something weird.

Though the eyes are not in perfect focus, but a good shot nonetheless.

Good shooting overall Raj... are you looking to do this professionally now?

Very nice shot.

But I do not like the WB at all.

Not in this one.
