Sony's NEX5 and NEX3 utilizes new APS-C sensor from Sony .It is interesting to note the ISO performance specially against D5000. I felt Noise removal done by Sony is just too much ,and hell lot of detail is lost .

Even though its not right to compare a dslr with a small camera like NEX5,but those who want simple camera with superb image quality + portability, and who doesn't mind paying high price charged by SOny for its lenses (NEX series uses E mount and one needs converter worth $199 to use alpha mount lenses.Just to point out 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 costs $300 separately(maybe 18-55MM Uses metal finish thats why ..arrg! ).

Note :Alpha Lens adpater doesn't autofocus lenses with inbuilt motor(with SAM).

The answer from Sony: “Hi XXX, The LA-EA1 Mount adaptor which allows use of A-mount lenses on NEX cameras does not include auto-focus actuation for A-mount lenses. The NEX recognize the value of AF for A-mount lenses with NEX cameras, but the slow AF acquisition time of legacy mount lenses with Contrast AF systems resulted in AF function not being included. This is consistent with other Lens Mount adaptors for cameras using Contrast AF with legacy lenses. NEX also uses a powerful Focus Magnifier to aid Manual Focusing, helpful when using A-mount lenses. I hope that info was helpful!”

I did check it out the other day in the showroom. Quite fantastic for what it is.
I also think you're being a bit unfair to it. The Sony's image quality definitely is better than the rest in the test. Nikon's Gen III cams would only be out in Q4 2010/Q1 2011 and I think it's the same for Canon. SO until then, this is definitely one of the cleanest APS-C sensors around.

Now Sony, get your act together and put this sensor into a proper A700 successor!
