Good attempt, debajoti. Macro chacha and other experts will give proper critique.
Imho, Dof is a lil shallow for my liking. Also a sharp focus on the eyes and head of the insect would have really worked wonders.

@Deb: In plain and simple terms, the photo is lacking a critical point of focus. In macro photography, DoF is so shallow that EXACT point of focus is THE single-most important thing. But, in your photograph, the bee is totally out of focus. Had the bee be in-focus, it would've made this photograph very interesting. :)

Very simply and correctly put! Thanks.

What Camera you are using?
EDIT:got it.Using a D5000.

The Biggest mistake people do while clicking close-ups is that they forget to switch to macro mode.Camera companies call close-up as macro mode.Yea right..Dumb you...

Anyways,in simple terms when we are close to a subject, our camera should be able to focus at those distances. When we shift to close-up mode, the camera now has the ability to AF close range.

So non macro mode is the first critique.

It seems from your photo that you used flash.Direct (mean naked)usage of flash results in very harsh shadows and harsh light in general. So the first thing you need to do is make a nice DIY Softbox. You will immediately see better results.

ON a Positive side, your composition is perfect. The Yellow Wasp is composed nicely. She is showing aggression and a warning. Her Nest also has come out nicely.

Just go outside and hunt for insects. You will love it.

macro mode in dslr

Debajyoti:
I will suggest you to manually select focus point instead of relying on camera .

That flower icon is your close-up mode.So i guess the D5000 will have a similar control layout as the D90.that close-up mode gives predetermined aperture settings etc.Thats an easy way of quick closeup shots.

@Debajyoti: Tell me one thing. Are you cropping your images, like 80-90%?In your next series, still the subject is out of focus. Not totally but on the verge.

For a quick DIY softbox, order a Pizza Hut Garlic Bread home delivery.Eat the yummy garlic bread, and make a diy softbox out of that.attach reflective gift wrapping paper inside, cut a hole for your flash, attach butter paper on one side of the box,and enjoy your new softbox.

forgot to tell,thats a solitary wasp. :)

I know about it .that macro mode is the biggest joke in my opinion.I was comparing on the lines of pns .

anyway ,kit lens isn't sufficent for macro photography(more of less just god for close up's) unless one uses some kind fo macro filter etc or do reverse lens technique .

The Big box yes.You can find the tutorial in everything macro thread under macro here on this forum.

I think in the third attempt, you are getting the hang of it.
