My $0.02:
Achieving the sharpest image possible is critical to a great image. The things I look for in a tripod are:
* No center column - Using a center column defeats the purpose of a tripod, it’s a monopod on three legs. Also, without a center column I can get low to the ground for eye level shots of birds on the beach, macro work, etc. This is expensive.
* Weight capacity - I want a tripod that gives allows me to build my system without having to update it. Purchasing a tripod that will support more than my equipment weighs gives me the extra support I need plus allow me to add larger lenses to my system without having to buy another tripod.
* Max & min height - I look for a tripod that will go to at least my full height so I can comfortably stand for hours. This is very important and you need to go to the shop and check it out.
* Weigh - Because I am in the field hiking great distances at time, I want a tripod that doesn’t weight me down. That’s why I use the carbon fiber tripods (expensive) for their stability as well as for their light weight.
P.S.: All the above depends on your camera system and its weight. You can skip a few points, if its for P&S or lighter cameras. Gorillapod is great, but some situations will need a normal tripod.
Does the look a like gorrila pod works?whose link I provided above?

the basic ways to stabilize your image are either thru a tripod or a monopod or a gorilla pod or a bean bag.
Ill assume you do not have a heavy camera.so for starters ill suggest you go for vivitars.easy on wallet and weight also.Start off and then progress as you buy equipment.
