Wow! Congrats! What a buy!

Approved

I do have a question though... What is the reason for buying this one? Is it the f2.8? Coz you already have the 400mm.

Evidently I expect to see the full effects of this bazooka! :)

@Ken Da: Yes, the 300mm L is the f2.8 version!

@Surya: *Poof*! I am absolutely speechless. What an acquisition? I can't help but ask how much did it cost you, because Amazon lists it's price as $4,340!!??

Would love to watch some sample images, off of the 300 f2.8! Congratulations, Surya! Ah, the Wildlife thread is going to be on fire now. :D

@ Kris, Thank you very much. 2.8 aperture is one of the criteria as well as ability to take on the TC's.

@ Aryan, Thank you very much.

Congrats Surya! I hear the 300 2.8L is a killer of a glass & is whooping heavy on wallet. Now, you'll certainly set the wildlife & bird threads on fire. I'm withdrawing from 'em now. :P

PS: Question: How's it hand held? Weighs a lot & needs tripod? How's the IS on this bazooka?

Wow! That was THE next logical lens upgrade for you:)

I do have a question though... What is the reason for buying this one? Is it the f2.8? Coz you already have the 400mm

The 100-400L has a max aperture of f/5.6 at 300mm. This one is f/2.8. That gives you two full stops of additional light and twice as much separation from the bg.

Even with a 1.4x TC at 420mm, the 300L is 1 full stop faster that the 100-400L at 400mm and yet sharper with faster AF ;)

Heck, you could even slap on a 2x TC to get 600mm f/5.6 and yet get decent sharpness and Auto focus on any EOS body:)

The 100-400L is a hobbyist lens at best while the 300 2.8 undoubtedly Pro league material. At USD 4.5k its definitely not for the armatures. It's also widely believed to be the 2nd sharpest lens made by canon after the 200mm f/2 L IS which retails for a whooping USD 6k:eek:

Comparing the 100-400L with the 300mm 2.8L is like comparing a Honda Civic to a Lotus Elise:)

Hmmm now what next?

Expect to see the Canon 600mm f4 L IS within 12-18months:D

PS: Question: How's it hand held? Weighs a lot & needs tripod? How's the IS on this bazooka?

While almost twice the weight of the 100-400L at 3kilos, its still pretty hand holdable. It's compact and fat dimensions give it great balance on a gripped 50D. The 3-stop IS comes in very handy as well for slower ss shots:)

I thought that he had the 400mm Prime. Which I thought was pretty good!

Wow, 3kg lens plust the camera weight might get it close to 4-5kgs (approximately)! And, still shooting hand held and getting superb sharp shots. Applause to all you guys who do it!

Note to self: I need to stop smoking too many packets of cigarettes. And, maybe its my deformity on the right side hand that doesn't even allow me to hand hold a 18-200mm lens with D40 weighing close to 1.5-2kgs.

Btw, guys, another question. How does the IS/OS/VR really work? I have the OS lens and could not find any difference when shooting hand held in low light. I always feel the need for a tripod. Can you make me aware of using this feature? I don't use it now as it consumes battery & carry tripod.

@ Vicky, Thank you very much for that comprehensive info on the beast...Well, getting used to the extra weight and dynamics...

Its better balanced hand held as I used the gripped 50d...The lens has to be supported by its own neck strap....Using the one on the camera body will put strain on neck as well as the flange of the body.

Will definitely upload the initial test pic. and let know the progress...

I am trying to hit the sweet spot of the lens...to optimize its usage...

Whats next from birding, do we now see astronauting. I would love to see those astronauts, spaceships etc :D

My neighbour Banta singh after knowing the price said "oye, kothe, itne mein to santrooo aa jaati ..Budhe ne desi pi li hai, ne to sathiya gaya hoonda..Agar itne hi pass se photo lene thi to santro chala kar pass jaake photo kich leta, kam se kam gadi gharwalo ke kaam to aati." and i kicked him out for the day....

Can we see some real birdie :p;):D shoots also from this one? My neighbour "Santa Singh" would have placed it some where near the college and would have used it as sharp shooter for entire day :d

Enjoy it too the fullest, i am not sure how many of those are there in India, but i am privilaged to know there is someone in our community who owns it and who is humble enough to share his experinces. Look forward to many more shots from you :)

And kindly overlook the joke part, nothing to offend you, be light hearted.

Thank you Viny, for that sense of humor...LOL... Well it gets compared to lot of things...like I could have bought a Entire cycle shop...or 10 mopeds or a 2 second hand M 800..etc...

Its fun to hear different perspective for your madness....:):)

I have posted few pic. on the Birding and Wildlife thread...to the effect.
