Nice topic of discussion this, Lovish. The basic idea behind panning as a technique is that you pan your camera along with the moving subject and end up getting a sharp subject but a blurred background. This gives the shot a feeling of movement and speed. It’s particularly useful in capturing any fast moving subject whether it be a car, a person who is running, etc.
However, I think objects that are moving side to side are challenging to capture and can result in messy looking shots as the motion blur can be quite erratic. Hence, say, if you know the subject's 'destination', it is much easier to click a shot of him, than otherwise.

There are a lot of good people who make such videos

also check out other videos...
Well as Aryan has already stated, its add a sense of movement to the pic. Basically, when u take a panning shots, the subject(say a car or a bike, etc) remains more or less constant(in same position) in respect to the frame, while the background does not. Which results in a sharp subjects and a blurred background.
Try out panning shots, trying it yourself is the best way to learn...:)

Some basic stuff to say here...
Panning shots are nice if your subject is moving from left to right. If you do not have a choice, well, too bad.
Secondly, your subject is looking at you... does not really make your image superb you see. Looks posed. And to make a posed photography look good is one helluva task.

No real reason as such, dada. :D And with the 2010 R1, it didn't matter. ;) :D
