Hello there,
This is varun,i need your help to choose my first ever DSLR :)
After setting my hands on point and shoot, i felt like now i should upgrade my 3rd eye from point and shoot to DSLR.
Please suggest me a good cam as per my requirements.
Here it goes..
1) Budget < 30k (max)
2) Either canon or Nikon
3) considering that i am more interested in nature, portraits and a automotive photography.
4) What all lenses i'll be needing for the above stated stuff.
PS- under my budget i have found 2 cameras
CANON EOS 1000D and NIKON 3000D
If there is any other camera which is better among the two, then please share, els suggest me from the above 2 :)
Thank you
Regards

You can look at the Canon EOS 1000D seriously. Since I am a Canon user, I can only suggest Canon equipment based on my own experience with the same. Looking at your interest in the fields of photography that you have mentioned (nature, portraits, automotive), I would suggest you can try and get the 50mm lens along with the kit lens.
By the way, the kit lens (the 18-55 IS) is a brilliant value for money lens. It would keep you happy for months, if not more. However, for portraits nothing beats the 50mm (either the 1.8 or the 1.4, or if you have the budget, even the f1.2!) or the 85mm f1.8/ f1.4 would be amazing. For rest of the requirements, you can choose different lenses. :)

I would say consider the Nikon as well. Nikon takes punchier images out of the box.
500D is way more VFM in bundles than D90.
But d3000 vs 1000D is a complete toss up. And you'll feel the Nikon more meaty to use, and more intuitive as well. Use your own brain.
Don't buy the logic that you must buy what your friends are buying (ok ok, don't buy panasonic micro 4/3rds or such :p). Buy what feels natural AND what fits your pocket.
And for tele lens, check out the Nikon mount Tammy 70-300. Very VFM

Call Anvay, he will tell you. Actually the world does not stop at Canon and Nikon.
My Nikon is good but I purchased by making a choice over Pentax K100D couple of years back.
It was only the brand which made me purchase the Nikon since I had zero idea. I was not confident about Pentax. I was so wrong.
So you can come out of Canikon song and see there is a world with many more choices and better deal, feature, functionality and quality at same/lower price.
All you'll get is some bashings from no-knowledgers!..

Pentax comes into the picture when you have an X relative sitting abroad who can provide you pentax gear when needed.
in INDIA,IDLDPL is the official distributor of pentax.so pentax official gear is also actually available.
and the main concerned shop of pentax is through this.
Jindal Photo Limited
11/5-B, Basement-01, Basement-01
Pusa Road, Karol Bagh,New Delhi - 110 005
tel:+91 1125767000
fax:+91 11 25767015
so people telling you that pentax gear cannot be repaired and has no support in india is wrong.just cause people dont buy them they dont have the knowledge of the ASS of pentax.pentax never did aggressive marketing for their products.canon and nikon did.
it all boils down to your status symbol and how u wanna showcase urself in friends etc.you go ahead and buy pentax people will say that you did a foolish decision.i will hardly see here anybody recommending you a KX from pentax as a starter which is much better in high ISO than these starters from canikon.we are talking starters since you are interested in starter editions.
people will say that you will upgrade soon.but your soon and my soon are different aint it?so this cam is also ur investment.
and dont give heavy weightage to the FPS.3-4FPS is also good for starters.are you gonna go the next day shooting pro sports??if you are then you need to boost your budget heavy.
so from my side the pentax KX is another option i m adding to your list.quite a few are having troubles with the Kx but many are happy with what its providing.
otherwise the canikon options are as always open.many will say to you that buying pentax will be like a gamble.so its ur choice of which brand to buy.

I thank to all of you for your suggestions.
Since i already mentioned that my choice is either canon or Nikon :)
@Aryan da
I simply agree with you that 1000D (18-55) along with 50mm prime will be the best option for me.
Thank you once again

I am also a canon user, i tried D40,1000D and Sony A200 while buying,
canon 1000d has live view 7 point auto focus and IS lenses over Nikon, hence took canon,
do consider the Sony too,
In fact i may put my 1000d on sale soon, ordered a D40 which is stuck at customs:(.

I heard that D40's production has stopped!
afaik I know that the main disadvantage of sony a200 is that 3rd party lens cant be used on it,was considering D40 also but its not available,D60's new avatar D3000 is good with marginal upgradation.
Dont know about anything about the canon cams.
Olympus and Pentax also sell good VFM cameras!

@Varun: Congratulations. So, I see you have got the nifty-fifty instead of the kit-lens. Great piece of glass that! Do share some sample photographs from your new equipment.
