@arijit: its a spherical composition.there are certain options in dedicated pan softwares like spherical, cylindrical etc.and a good shot..
@powerslave: frankly dont know..are u asking what area i covered??the above shot is roughly 180 degrees.
@Ken: I use Panorama Factory V5 from Smoke City Design.
@amanomics:good try..HDR and pans are two difficult task to achieve..

I am talking about how architecture photographers use all kinds of PP and Tilt/Shift lenses to get the distortion and "perspective" as accurate as possible. :D

The sky was overcast and dull grey, you can see the mountains in the distance are under cloud cover.
Would it be possible to bring out more from the clouds if I would have tried a HDR'ish approach to this shot?

Maybe try HDR. Wherein you will lose some sharpness and get some grain.
Or underexpose the shot and bring out the greens in selective treatment.

No, your laptop screen is fine. What I meant is that you get such nice uniform diffused lighting because of the absence of a single strong light source. And that is achieved because of overcast conditions. You get my point now?

Thanks for your comments/sugggestions fellas. The city looks like crap during daytime! Just featureless, dreary concrete as far as the eye can see...
amvj : The procedure for making a photo like this -
1. First I made a 360 degree panaroma. The way I did it is that I took 8 tripod-based photos of from the terrace of my building with plenty of overlap between adjacent photos. Then the panaroma was made using the "stitch panaroma" option in Windows Live Photo Gallery.
The resulting panaromic image has some black gaps at the top and bottom. These were cropped out.
2. Then I opened the panaromic photo in the GIMP. The photo is resized to make it a perfect square. For example a 1024x768 photo would be resized to 1024x1024.
3. The "polar co-ordinates" filter is applied to the photo to get the circular effect. If you want the sky facing outwards (it is inwards in my photo) then rotate the image 180 degrees before applying the polar co-ordinates filter.

Here is a simple step-by-step procedure for stitching panoramas using Photoshop CS3
Took the test shots using a P&S since my phone battery just died before I was about to start! Tried a lot of manual alignment but couldn't do justice. Then typed panorama in PS help and found it.
Step 1: Open Photoshop. Under the File menu, go to Automate and then Photomerge.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_W2kA7xxEITw/TdkGR-MVVYI/AAAAAAAAARM/iMTDFfS-dxc/s720/step1.jpg
Step 2: In the dialog box that opens, click Browse
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_W2kA7xxEITw/TdkGPEDEReI/AAAAAAAAARI/jwS0z2J7830/s720/step2.jpg
Step 3: Select the files required to be merged and click OK
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_W2kA7xxEITw/TdkGpxlrGrI/AAAAAAAAARQ/T6VKvjkL-hE/s720/step3.png
Step 4: Click OK again in the dialog box. Photoshop will get to work!
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_W2kA7xxEITw/TdkHSpsy0LI/AAAAAAAAARY/FsDg8vt9p5Q/s720/step4.png
Step 5: The result will be something like this.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_W2kA7xxEITw/TdkHQk9QmuI/AAAAAAAAARU/mWiwZap_hH8/s720/step5.jpg
Step 6: Flatten the image and crop it to remove the white parts.
Tip:
The thickness of the 'waist' or central part of the image can be increased by taking a number of overlapping shots. The fewer shots, the more one will have to crop the image due to the slim 'waist'!

Thanks for liking, I can't understand why the stitched image was in almost a lying "S" shape. I had wanted to crop the bottom section also but it was leaving the image with no perspective at all. And this place is about 20-25 minutes drive from my home. The view is of roughly between 140-160 degrees here. Will try again with a tripod. Last week on my trip to Gangtok I shot clouds casting shadows on hills from the moving vehicle only, will post in a few days.

I've observed that when I shoot straight ahead (ie horizontal), and keep my arm steady, very little cropping is required. The result comes as a near-rectangle.
However if I shoot downwards or upwards(the sky), ie keeping my camera at an angle (no matter how steady my arm), after stitching, the image comes out parabolic, and sometimes S-shaped.
I don't know if this can be eliminated.

For shooting panorama I would suggest shooting vertically (portrait mode). This way you have better options for cropping. (By the way, you can also shoot vertical panoramas and for this shoot horizontally.) Another thing is to shoot at normal focal length (between 35 to 70mm) to avoid the perspective distortion. Using tripod is the best practice.
I am sure you know that panorama images has to be shot at same focal length, manual focus, manual white balance and all automation like D-lighting should be off.
This picture is heavily compressed, the original is very sharp.

No, all the shots were handheld! :D and I took 26 of them, but used 22 for the panorama!
Bump up the contrast a bit in such shots and use USM. (Unsharp Mask). Just a thought!

A 180 degree panorama from one end of Jubilee Park, Jamshedpur. The park was built in 1958 to commemorate 50 years of the Indian Steel Industry (Tata Steel, the country's first steel plant was established here), and inaugurated by then PM Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru on March 1st, 1958.
Composed of 11 handheld shots. Note the different exposure for the grass, that is because of a cloud that suddenly covered the sun.

You are filling up with panoramas.
I wish you had better light.

It still is my favourite subject! I was hoping for slightly better light too.
Another one for today! This is Jubilee Lake, Jamshedpur, behind where I was standing when I took the previous shot. The water looked simply beautiful with the sky's reflections. A 3-shot panorama.

A number of tourists from Kolkata visit Jamshedpur for a day, and they are always impressed by the greenery, and especially the park! :)

And being an industrial town too! This particular part of town is the most beautiful. Right next to the park is the Keenan stadium which once in a blue moon hosts international cricket matches, and XLRI, established in 1949 & arguably the oldest B-School in India.
If you are in Kolkata during Durga Pujo, you could try and visit Jamshedpur for a day then. You will like it. The last time I witnessed Pujo there was in 2007, and there were 244 registered Pujos going on there, official figure!
Like the clouds and the water in your shot, Mohit!

That beach panaroma is simply gorgeous, mohit_k. Although I can't help but feel that a very small contrast increase would have helped?

Thanks. I'll try it out in one more round of post processing.

Excellent shot Mohit! Yes, I too agree that a bit of contrast would make it look good.
But where is this beach? Definitely does not look like India!

Thanks for the comment.
Well it is southern Thailand. To be specific, it is an Island near Phuket called Koh Phi Phi Don.
