'twas shot last December at around 5am. I was trying to shoot the streetlights and forgot to change the shutter speed of 5 seconds. (Tv mode) Those are the streetlights/tail lights/random light sources.
As for your shot, I think it would be better suited to the still life category. Good shot btw. :)

Ken da,
Help me understand. The object is so familiar its just not abstract - not for me. Though like I said - very well done.
If I think right - he's zoomed IN/out while taking a long exposure thus resulting in the image. All said the focus control has been tremendous. But, I miss how its abstract. Take amanomics' image as an example!

But Ken da how can the trail of lights come if he has taken two seperate shots and stacked on each other??
Although I've never tried, but me too thinks its the long shutter zoom-in/out. Can't think of any other technique where such focus could be maintained.

Its the shape of trail of lights which makes me think of zoom while long exposure!
And the focus in both images of the Gate is crazily spot on!

Dj,
Below are some links of images, where there's a beauty from the pattern but it doesnt make sense by itself - there's no major recognizable image. In your image, India Gate is such a strong symbol that it makes the image unabstract for *me*.

Till date I am clueless. Apparantly even the guys claiming to shoot abstract are unable to define abstract !..
Hitanshu and aman, can you please share you definition of abstract 'precisely'?
"Normal subjects shot at unconventional angles, exposures or focal lengths (or a combination of all these) to accentuate specific areas, patterns etc. that lie within them."
That's how I define it.
hitanshu
03-18-2010, 10:54 AM
Absolutely. Its when you see the pattern and one is unable to see the whole. Aman's photos are still holistic from that perspective. Here are other non-smoke ones:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/waseemanis/3011700609/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pksswat/3728112377/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nipuntantia/3864888461/
PS: They are not mine. They are from a Delhi Flickr Club's abstract thread. Even there its the same argument constantly!
PPS: a definition from there:
coming to Abstract..... if you look at the works of Picasso, they might not look good to u at all. While making a portrait, he doesnt not try to capture the features of the face...he tries to capture the features of the personality, the mind.... So his portrait doesnt depict the face, it depicts the mind of the model..... the thought that the painter gets is depicted. Thats what Abstract is all about. Many times its just the colours that attract you. And there are many contemporary painters who just throw a few colours and call it an abstract..... and leave the viewer confused. U will get to see many good(and not so good) abstract paintings in the exhibitions

That's how I define it.
Ok I am 10% clear. Still the definition is a little blur. Many more subjects falls into this category.
Can a wide angled portrait considered as abstract ?
... Correct me if I am wrong. If I take a wide angled portrait of a convict in a jail, underexposing the shot, is that an abstract?
Ask yourself, "Why not"?
When you're seeing something from a perspective that's different from the accepted "Conventional" one, it's an abstract capture.
The beautiful thing about photography is that once you know the rules, you can break them. :)

I always read this and always feel like replying but I dunno y I was not replying.
Your shot is not abstract. And even kept in a different category say still ife, then the shot is not good. Sorry if I sound harsh and straight.
It lacks basics, and I recommend you to jot down yourself what is missing and what has went wrong. This is the best way to learn if you really want to learn.
Sorry if I sound repeating, whenever you are unable to make it whether your shot is good or not then open flickr and check the photographs taken by some great photographers. See whats good in there and y is that good. What is that you photo lacks compared to that one u see on flickr. If not flickr then check some good photographs taken by our friends in t-pin only.
If you are able to make difference between a good and a bad photograph then only you can call yourself a photographer.
You have 1000D, its a great cam and can do wonders if used in a right way. You have to yourself recognize that 'right way'. Here u'll get hints not the chapters to study.
I hope you dont take me wrongly.

@Hitanshu: The emphasis is on the shadow. Its only a shadow and whats the point of focusing it. Also there is no distraction in this photo and the shadow is clear despite the softness. Its a different type photo which I never took. The photo tells the story, isn't it ? ;)

Abstraction is 'real' and beautiful; probably more real than reality itself - a close up of a hand made lamp, provides for an absolutely beautiful, and abstract design. :)

@Ashish: :D
Another one from my end.
Singing with the Wind.
I was standing at the balcony of a double storey building when I looked down and spotted the grass below. They were dark green in colour, and because of the slight wind that was blowing, they were 'singing' with the wind.
I backed up a couple of steps, and created this photograph looking through the glass window. An otherwise 'simple' (and perhaps uninteresting) subject turns out to be a colorful abstract filled with certain colorful design elements, when seen just that wee bit 'differently'. :) ♥

That's reassuring to know!
Well this is called an 'Akash Kandil' in Marathi, which means a Lantern. It is a decorative piece used in Diwali festival. An electric incandescent light bulb is mounted inside this lantern and this whole setup is hung up and lit outside the house.

Akash Kandil!
Thanks for the description.
Sure!
Its heaven here in Nashik, Maharashtra right now will all houses sporting chains of lights and these 'Akash Kandils' and with the winter making its presence stronger, roaming at 12 in the night with the Camera is sheer bliss! :)

Thanks Ashish, powerslave and Krishnendu sir!
In my humble opinion, abstract is something in which the subject is not identifiable easily (or at first glance). I think, Ashish, your shot might be suited more to the Potpourri thread.
