Some really beautiful shots there Sri:)

I feel all of them could use a little bit of selective USM and a slight contrast bump. Unless, of course, if u intentionally wanted this soft fairy tale look:)

I rarely see wide angle of view combined with thin DOF for flower photos, so that's what I did for this available light shot taken with the 24mm f/1.4 II and 5D2. The sun is poking through the trees in the background.

hitanshu
01-24-2010, 10:27 AM
That is really nicely done - but pardon my comments - isn't the flower a tad soft?

Though I agree - razor sharp dof with wide angle photos of flowers is very rare!

Daniel Browning
01-24-2010, 01:39 PM
Thanks!

- isn't the flower a tad soft?

I welcome comments like that. Yes, it is a tad soft -- and for two reasons.

The first reason is that I don't like very much sharpening; I prefer a smoother, low-contrast look, so I intentionally try to achieve that when resizing images. Try this image on for size:
http://thebrownings.name/photo/2010-01-flower/2009-04-10-7249.jpg

Is that level of sharpening more to your taste? Or does it still look soft to you?

The second reason is the thin DOF. Look at the following magnified crop:

http://thebrownings.name/photo/2010-01-flower/2009-04-10-7249-crop.jpg

Here you can see the critical focus is on the stamen, which puts some parts of the leaves (e.g. lower right) slightly outside the DOF in the crop.

hitanshu
01-24-2010, 10:23 PM
That's crazy amounts of sharpness. FF FTW! :)

synn
01-24-2010, 10:29 PM
Browning: Don't take this as a "revenge" post or anything, but although the shot is technically every bit true to all that you said, Compositionally, I don't find much going on in there.

Moreover, razor thin DoF has its uses, just not here.

Daniel Browning

The shot looks decent, but think about how it could be improved for example: Could you have exposed it so the detail on the flower was preserved? Could you have framed it in such a way as to show more detail from the flower and make it more appealing (perhaps shot it from the front instead of from the side)?

Stuff like that.

A flower's appeal is in its contradictions - so delicate in form yet strong in fragrance, so small in size yet big in beauty, so short in life yet long on effect.

hmm I think u are right. The vignetting was quite on higher side.
With LCD I think the only way is to go 8 bit way if u have a 6bit monitor. I have seen caliberated 6 bit ones, even they show red a little orangish.

LOL, I was shooting in full manual... and had just moved from a sunflower facing away from to sun to this one which was directly facing the sun.... and I forgot to change my exposure settings:(:p

I recently purchased my first DSLR. Last weekend, I went up to the terrace to click a couple of shots and practice. All I have is my kit lens, so none of these are macro shots, but I kinda liked 'em, so decided to share.

Krishnendu, I didn't save for the web this time AND I used the Unsharp Mask tool in PS, so hope you get the exif data and the images are sharp enough.

I like the first two and the last but one....You have a steady pair of hands to get decent sharp pictures.

The wide angle shots of the flower pots has distracting objects...like the hose, the compound wall...etc. Take time to clear the clutter.

Subject isolation is very important and bringing out the character of the flower or highlighting its predominant shapes or colors will add to the overall feel of the picture.

Early morning or late evening light gives the best feel.

Get the best out of your available equipment and have the exposure right...

Last weekend a couple of friends and I went to Matheran - a hill-station located about 90 kms from Mumbai. It was a great trip, filled with long walks down tree-lined paths, lots of stomach-clenching laughter, and some great food.

I was into week 3 with the camera, so practiced shooting everything in sight. Flowers (thankfully) were amenable subjects, so I kinda went overboard. Here are some of my better attempts (you should see how insipid the others were).

Thanks for the feedback Surya. Can you please explain what you mean by 'blown-out hi-lites'? Am not very savvy with the technical terms.

The saturation is honest-to-God actual colors of the flowers. All I did in PS was use the auto-contrast, auto-levels, auto-color (sometimes) and sharpen functions. Should I have also reduced the saturation? Also (.. and I know this may be hard to explain, but...) how much saturation is a good amount?

Blown out Hi-lites means colors looking much brighter than it actually was...It happens due to over exposure of one or more color when U have a gamut of colors in the subject...

You can seen in the pic. 1 and the last two...the details in the whits and the florescent green is lost...

This might have happened if you choose auto metering...where the camera averages the overall light prevalent...resulting in some over exposed and some under exposed area of the subject. The over exposed is called the blown out hi-lites...

U can correct this by different metering techniques for correct exposure...and trying to analyzing what is called as HISTOGRAM..which is present in all DSLR's and is an indicator of your exposure.

Saturation is in my view is little subjective...I the photographer feels the image has the RIGHT COLORS ....close to the true colors present...then its ok...Here in the last two pic. of yours the green's and the pinks i feel are little over saturated....( its my personal Opinion)

I am not perfect....but, still have a long way to go...Regards.

Ah Ok. Thanks for the explanation Surya. Now I get it.

Yes, my camera is set to Evaluative metering, so parts of the image are overexposed. Perhaps I ought to have switched to Spot metering and locked the exposure (BTW, I still need to figure out how to lock exposure on this camera). Since this was a little later in the morning (around 9.30 - 10 am) the light was harsh. If I had exposed for the darker areas, the pictures would have probably been darker and perhaps dull. In such a situation (overxposure in parts of the picture v/s a dull overall image), what do you suggest should be the course of action? Can this be overexposure be corrected in post production?

On the saturation point, I am sure you have a lot more experience than I do, which is why I'm struggling with trying to understand, how much is too much. I guess I shall learn with time and practice.

- Payal.

You seem to get the point....when the difference in lighting is too much a little under exposure will do a world of good.

Its easy to handle a little under exposure than over exposure in post process.

But the underlying fact is to GET THE EXPOSURE RIGHT AT THE FIRST TIME...!!

But the underlying fact is to GET THE EXPOSURE RIGHT AT THE FIRST TIME...!!

These are exactly the two points that were taught to me by some Pullitzer nominees nearly two decades ago!

However, if the difference in light zones is too contrasty, there is not much one can do about it. Which is why one should keep shooting schedules to early morning or late afternoon.

If you overcook the USM, the noise too gets accentuated. Which is why it is best to have as less noise as possible in the original shot.

I think you have overdone it. the sideeffects are visible enough for eveyone to know about your workflow.

I would have gone back to the same subject, recompose the shot with different setting and improve the results. Spend more time on the subject, if possible use a tripod.

Actually I first upload the photos on my photo blog and then pull them from there to this site. I tried to resize the photos in this site itself by using the resize handles but it does not seem to work.

(You dont have to scroll sideways to see the whole image. Just press Ctrl & + to zoom in and Ctrl & - to zoom out. This will be much more easier then to scroll to see the photos.)

The point isn't zooming out here. On a page if everyone else is posting 800 pixel wide images and you're posting much larger ones, are we supposed to keep zooming in and out? I think there was a rule about the largest resolution on is allowed to post. Ken? Anvancy?

hitanshu
04-24-2011, 08:13 PM
I'd +1 to Xavier. There's an ideal width beyond which one must not go(1024 or 800?). It gets rather irritating to size/resize just like that.

I fully agree with you. I think I will just resize the photos to 1024 resolution from the next time and upload them to the PIN's server instead of pulling them from Blogspot.com since the re-size feature present in this site does not seem to work at my end.

At the same time I would also like to mention that if there is a Maximum photo resolution rule, I think the site must enforce it by simply re-sizing the photo by itself when it is uploaded (if the photo is more then the specified resolution rule ie). It will surely save some time and similar such problems in the future for new-comers to this site.

But then now I realise that you are not into sharp focus of your subjects! :)

Yes I dont care about When the subjects are dynamic.

My first priority is the moments...
Next is Metering/Light...

When light is low, I go wide open with aperture....
When wide open with a 50mm and above - every mm in depth matters, you know it better than me :).
if focus is on nose, the eyes and ears are out of focus.... But for me that is never a matter of concern, if I get the moments captured I am done for a 4x6 print.

One reason I am looking forward for a 51 point AF system is to get the focus where I want. some times I struggle with 11 points and have no time for manual focus.

Technique:

I had read and then experienced later that shooting photos in which White color is prominent is difficult as the Camera Metering gets confused and underexposes the image quite a bit. The trick to overexpose photo to get the 'correct' colors.

In this photo I used Center Weighted Metering and metered from just side of the flower and then used Flash with Negative 3 Flash Compensation. This exercise helped me to know how the Camera can get fooled quite a lot of times.

The exposure is spot on. The texture of the petals are quite visible. I like the shot as it is as far as exposure is concerned. I cannot comment on the shadow part because some times the shadow adds to the look of picture and sometimes not. Maybe it would look better without shadow.
To shoot macro and especially flowers the best option would be off camera flash and bounce the light from a reflector or a white board. You can keep the flash mounted on the camera but direct it towards the reflector placed above from a side. Obviously, you'll need the camera mounted on a tripod and more time.
