/\ Nice shot there... just wish it was a click or two lower on the color saturation:)

Thank you!

Believe it or not, the colors are SOOC in Vivid +2 saturation mode. I kind of like rich saturation photos that are more oriented towards the Art side rather then the Reality side.

I am planning of making that my style.

Here's one from my side...

That is an unbelievable photo! But I would have preferred a simple border then the one currently used.

Ashish,
I don't know which flower is this but there are many flaws in your picture. It is lacking in composition, it has blur due to shake, the processing is not good.
I wish to start a tutorials in Lightroom for beginners but unfortunately don't have that much time. If somebody takes the imitative I will definitely contribute.
Since you are shooting Nikon I would recommend you process your raw pictures in Nikon View NX which is free. And then if you can get Capture NX (not free) it would be best for Nikon cameras.

Its a Hibiscus flower. Hand shake blur is something that I am working on but is the blur too much in this photo? The Focus is on the drop situated on the middle top part of the flower.

I liked this composition with the central part of the flower placed off center.

This is the first time that I tried Lightroom so i must have gone overboard with the processing!

Thanks for the CnC.:)

I kept the dark background to create balance in the photo.

[QUOTE=anirban;26597]One more for today. These are wild flowers.

The flower is not quite sharp Anirban. Shooting in Macro mode will require a very steady hand.

Just a hint of under-exposure would have helped you get some good colors SOOC. Use the Histogram feature in your camera to check the exposure. Ensure that the graph does not hit the extreme right side. If the graph is hitting the extreme right side then the photo is getting over-exposed.

Hi Anirban,
Look at both the flowers pictures, the colour in the second one is not proper. I guess the camera auto balance missed out. If you are shooting in raw (provided your camera has that feature) you can correct the white balance while processing.
All the best for your new camera. BTW which camera have you bought?

As AMVJ pointed the picture is not in focus. It could be for 2 reason.
One, you did not focus it properly or second you were outside the focusing range of your lens (very close).
Can you post the exif data with your pictures so that we can help you in learning the technicalities of photography?

I had shot the second one in "Super Vivid" mode, the colour of the flower is actually that vibrant. So the white balance is wrong. Could you please tell me how do I correct it in Photshop?
I've got a very simple P&S, Canon A800. It does not allow RAW.

EDIT: Here is the exif
Shot 1: f/3.0, 1/125s, ISO 100 @ 39mm(film equivalent)
Shot 2: f/3.0, 1/60s, ISO 100 @ 39mm
Shot 3: f/3.0, 1/800s, ISO 100 @ 39mm

Set you camera with the following settings:

Image quality: Set image quality to "Fine" from "normal"

Colour : Standard (Don't set vivid or other settings, you can enhance / saturate the colour later in photoshop or lightroom)

Don't use in-camera B&W or Sepia settings they could degrade the image quality. Take a "standard" photograph and then enhance it with photoshop.

Make sure to use "Macro" mode for close up objects. White flowers are always difficult to shoot. While shooting them, reduce the exposure (Exposure compensation) by -1/3, -2/3 or -1 - this depends on the lighting conditions. You can also use lightroom "Recovery" slider to suppress over exposure parts of the photo and you get more details.

I just noticed that your shot is taken at ISO400. At that ISO normally one should not get that much grain! Did you boost the noise?

You basically oversharpened/played with the sharpening settings or what?

ashishtamhane
09-01-2011, 05:04 PM
You basically oversharpened/played with the sharpening settings or what?

No I never touched the sharpness setting here.

Using the Sharpness setting to get some Grain is a sure-shot way to destroy your beautiful photo. Photos that are over-sharped don't look natural in the sense that there is a weird type of Halo around the edges. Also that 'Noise' looks more like computer generated.

In Lightroom, there is an explicit control for Grain. It can control the Amount of Grain, the Size and the Roughness. You can get a high amount of control over the grain by using this control plus this Grain looks more natural. I have used this over the photo above.

Another way to get some good quality Grain is to use High ISOs even in good light.

Here is one more from my end. I am more proud of the effort than the photo.

History -> This shot is taken with a 50 mm f/1.8 lens using a D60 with manual focus at Delhi Photofair 2011. Cropped/rotated using LR. The challenging part of the shot was to take it with people elbowing you and having to manually focus in the chaos of the photofair.
The lighting setup was good but as soon as I had the shot ready somebody would tug my bag. Well I got something in the end.

BTW to me the shot is a bit over exposed and lacks focus due to f/1.8 but I thought I'd share it anyways.

Even I was like that earlier... Now after reading a lot about these in our forum and other websites, I try to implement all these... :)

The orange background is another flower...

About your pic, I feel that the DOF is very shallow for a subject like this...

Considering the location and the chaos, nice effort though...

Nice one from you again Abru. :)

Thanks KrishnenduKes... Good to hear this from someone who I consider as one of the best photographers of the group...

Vibrant shot but what's with the black bars?

Thanks. The "Black Bars" are the border/frame... :p

For my shots which is in a 16:9 kind of format, I like this kind of a border and for 4:3 or vertical shots, I give white or black thin border which goes around the pic(There are exceptions too)....

Just my style.. thats all about it...

I think Krishnendukes and Nakul are not noticing the black bars because they dont find it distracting... Or... They are thinking about the Flower pot snap from Mohit... Or... We are looking at a new type of Eye problem.. :)

Good print material

A mustard flower growing in my garden. This is about as much bokeh I'll get at f/3.0.

I don't know why on earth I recalled Mahie Gill running through vast mustard fields in the movie Dev D while shooting this!!

I like the smooth blurring of the background there.

@Avinash:

Those petals are so detailed!

Good to see that you are really shooting these days Gokul.

Though I am not saying that whatever you are shooting is excellent. But do continue. You will get better.

Pretty good for me, but i think you are focusing too close? Did you use the Macro mode?

anvancy-(macro analyst)

the reason is the focus is on the outermost part of the petals and not the center of the flower.

Yes I did. That background blur is not Photoshopped! :D

Now that I scrutinize it, I agree. Could have tried Focus Lock-recompose I think...
