I was looking for a cheap superzoom camera with SLR like features to upgrade from my Sony Ericsson K790i mobile camera. This is when I came across the Finepix S5800 which is the model replacing the S5700 / S700. This camera offered best of both worlds at an amazing price. The S5800 has a sensor resolution of 8.0 megapixels and offers a good quality 10x zoom lens, SLR-like handling and a full range of manual exposure functions. It sports a 2.5" LCD monitor and a 230k electronic viewfinder with a 60fps refresh rate like SLR cameras. But where this camera makes the real difference is offering so many advanced features and a very good build quality and such a low price.

The camera body is made of plastic and it has a rubber grip below the shutter which makes it very easy to hold. This more or less makes up for the absence of optical image stabilzation. The camera feels a bit heavy but stable when held with the right hand due to the 4 AA size alkaline batteries which are placed on the right hand side of the camera. Battery backup is good. Overall the camera is ergonomically designed.

I have mostly used the camera in AUTO mode hence I wont be the best person to comment on the exposure modes available. The flash pops up automatically and it is pretty powerful. The camera offers Macro & Super Macro which are pretty good for taking pictures of tiny objects. Overall picture quality is good. However, during night time photography pictures taken in low light conditions have a lot of noise.

Conclusion:
I have been using this camera for sometime now and I would definitely recommend this camera to someone who is looking for a little more than a PnS camera. This camera offers a lot more features than a typical PnS camera but lacks image stabilzation. But for the price it comes it's a killer.

I own a Fujifilm S5700 which is the younger sibling of S5800. The ONLY difference between these cameras is the sensor - S5700 has a 7.1 MP sensor while the S5800 has an 8 MP sensor.

I have been using my camera on modes like manual, aperture priority & shutter priority and it is really good for the price. I'd say, it is one of the best platform for beginners...

After experimenting and learning on this camera for some time, we can go ahead and buy some camera that is 1 or 2 notch above this... That may be a high-end prosumer camera or a cheap DSLR...

Oh, forgot to mention one very important thing... The camera has an unbelievable battery life... I have taken more than 400 photographs in a single charge [Mostly on EVF, 5-10% shots with flash]. The camera needs 4 AA batteries... I use Kodak 2500 MAH and am really satisfied with their performance.

All in all, a great camera and highly recommended for any person looking for some control over the photographs and a tight budget. :)
