Hi,
Does is make any sense to invest extra for a Magnesium alloy body while buying a DSLR (Ex: Canon 50D, Nikon D300).
What is the realy advantage in terms of ruggedness and operating temparature?
Its obvious that I am not going to Alaska or Sahara for shooting.
Does dust matter for the camera life?
I have narrowed down on two cameras (with in 1000$ buget) with similar features.
D90(760$) and 50D(960$)
D300s is out of question (1600$ :( )
I like the D90 look, feel, and features.
Photo quality is same(difference can be noticed only in lab test conditions)
Does it make any sense to go for a magnesium alloy body canon 50D by paying 200$ more.
Apart form Magnesium Body and more FPS for sports photography what does 50D give more? I am happy with 10 mega pixel (anything more is a burden for my Memory card).
Recently vicky bought 50D. he should have some answers.
thanks,
Devaiah

D90 for the intuitive interface. I've shot almost 4000 images with my 500D but i still stumble a bit around the interface. Nikons are cameras designed for photogs by photogs. canon is designed by engineers (as a friend quips!). VFM = Canon.
Ergonomics/ease = Nikon

TBH, in terms of nikon placement, i would say the advantage the D300 and higher bodies has is not in the magnesium but the weather sealing involved. It is not exactly truly weather sealed, but a you will get through a light shower just fine. AFAIK, the 50D doesnt exactly have that going for it.
And as hitanshu just pointed out, yes the D90 is far more intuitive and ergonomically friendly than the canon. And since its cheaper, i would say go for it. Unless you can find a D300 (non-S). Might be a few still left around somewhere and should be cheaper than the S. If you can find one, would be one hell of a bargain :D.

Thats true, When I said Magnesium alloy body - it is for the weather proof. Not for the metal.

Well, if the megapixels don't matter to you, then get the D90 and use the extra cash and get some nice lenses. The lenses you can keep and the body can be upgraded later on. IMO the 50D doesn't really have much of a weather-sealing advantage vis-a-vis the D90.
Use the 200 dollars to get some better/good lenses and it will serve you better i think.

Get the 50D if you need the 6fps burst. Everything else is virtually same on both cameras except for the video option on the D90. And yes, the 50D is slightly weather sealed, the D90 is not.
The 7D vs D300/S comparison is fairer since Nikon does not have a 50D equivalent and neither does Canon have a direct competitor for the D90.

My do ana :)
Eventough I own a Canon DSLR I like the D90 because of its superior sensor performance and it coupled with 18-105 VR lens is the best combination today . But if you need the extra FPS then I would rather go for 40D.
