My 1000D lacks a spot meter and I see many first time DSLR buyers being asked to not buy the 1000D/400D because of this. I found out that one can actually use the partial metering option, which is nothing but a slightly larger (9%) circle in the center as a pseudo spot meter if you have a zoom lens. Using my Sigma 70-300 @ 100mm I clicked 4 shots of a rather unattractive subject to prove my point.
Here's the set :
1. Center-weighted average
Overblown highlights. One of the least used modes and I'm not a big fan of it anyway.
Aperture value : f/6.3
SS : 1/200
ISO : 400
Exposure Program : Manual

2. Evaluative
Overblown highlights again. Though this is one of the best modes for a large percent of lighting conditions that I shoot in.
Aperture value : f/6.3
SS : 1/200
ISO : 400
Exposure Program : Manual

3. Partial
Slightly clipped highlights at the tip of the bulb. A lot better than the earlier 2 modes for this scene.
Aperture value : f/6.3
SS : 1/2000
ISO : 400
Exposure Program : Manual

4. Pseudo Spot
Perfectly exposed bulb and a typical example of a spot metered shot.
Aperture value : f/6.3
SS : 1/3200
ISO : 400
Exposure Program : Manual

The last shot was achieved by zooming in @ 300mm, placing the bulb in the center of the frame and adjusting the shutter speed as per the camera meter and finally zooming out to 100mm (Av/Tv/P shooters will have to use the exposure lock button)
