Alongwith the release of the fast 7D ,Canon has launched and improvised few lenses .

Since rumours were going on circles since early this year for Canon to release the next generation of IS lenses i.e. Hybrid I.S. the first lens to have this feature would be the upgraded 100mm f/2.8 macro which would now have an "L" designation along with I.S.

Also Canon launches 2 new EFS lenses Canon 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 I.S. USM and Canon 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS. More news here

Looks like Canon is seriously looking at I.S. lenses. Sorry if its already a stale news.

Good News Approved

Hybrid lens released on 1st September 2009 and today is 2nd September and you are saying stale news!!! :)

Thanks for the research. I wonder how different this 100mm Macro would perform compared to the existing 100 Macro.

Ah! That lovely red ring around a lens just gives me that lovey-dovey feeling. :D And that 100mm f2.8 IS lens looks really good too. :) I will wait for the review of this lens, although, being an L lens and with IS, I am sure it would perform in superbly both in 1:1 macro and otherwise. Good job Canon! At times, I have really wished that the present 100mm macro lens from Canon sported an IS (like the Nikkor 105mm f2.8 VR). Now, my wish, it seems, has been granted. :D

I might even try and sell off my current 100mm f2.8 USM macro lens, and get this - the Canon EF 100mm f2.8L IS USM lens! :D

Though I would wait for the reviews on the new Canon 100 f/2.8 L IS USM but how much of IS is really needed for Macrography.

But none is speaking about Canon 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 I.S. USM and Canon 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS .I was interested in the 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM because of the wide mm and also USM motor. Lets see how it competes against Canon 17-55 F/2.8 IS USM in sharpness.

Starting with Canon's 18-200mm they have started to make lenses of same mm from Nikon (like 18-135). I think next would be a 18-105.

@Nelson: I am pretty sure a 2-stop IS (at 1:1 magnification) will REALLY help. I, at times, badly miss an IS in the present 100mm f2.8 macro, and now Canon is out with an IS version of their phenomenal 100mm macro lens! :)

These lenses might give a wide zoom flexibility. But I personally prefer using faster lenses opening till f2.8 or more! Which is why among the zoom lenses, the 16-35 still remains my favourite. http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-16-35mm-f-2.8-L-USM-Lens-Review.aspx

I thought as much.

Btw, what is a 2-Stop IS?

But I have not heard professionals cribbing about IS in macrography atleast and thats why you see previous to this Nikon 105 VR was the only lens having IS. My another fear is the sharpness shouldn't take a hit because of the HYBRID IS.

Then what about Canon 24-70 L f/2.8 :)

@Nelson: Given good light, there is no real need for IS in macro, but when the light gets a little dim, and at 1:1 magnification, it gets real hard. I am talking about hand-held shots. :)

@Ken da: So true. Instead of getting something like the newly announced 15-85mm lens, I would much rather get either the 16-35mm f2.8II L USM or the 24-70mm f2.8L USM (one of my 'to-get' lens ;))

Btw, what is a 2-Stop IS?

As for the 2-stop IS that the "new" IS 100mm macro lens is providing, it simply means, you can hand-hold shots at upto 2-times slower shutter speed than normal, which would really be handy in macro work.

P.S: For calculating f-stops (apertures) ,you calculate the f-stop by taking the square root of two to the power of the stop number.

For example, f-stop 2 = 2 (n^2=2). And hence, a full 2-stop advantage from an aperture of f4 would be f1.8! Actually, you are losing a full 2.2 stops if you are stopping down to f4 from f1.8. That is the reason we have constant aperture lenses. ;)

One more important which the new 100mm IS f2.8 Macro lens has is the 'Hybrid IS'. I do not have much idea how effective it will be when put to actual use, but according to Canon, the hybrid IS compensates for both angle camera shake and shift camera shake, which, atleast sounds brilliant! :) I am SO excited, already. :D

Let's see. At present, I am more than satisfied with the Non-IS 100mm macro lens. ;) As for the MP-E, eventually, I WILL end up getting it. I JUST KNOW! :D

Did not quite understand that part!

As per Thom Hogan (renowned Nikon expert), the VR in the 105 Micro stops being effective at Macro ranges and is only useful when used as a tele. He reckons it's not a big deal as it's meant to be a tripod/ monopod lens anyway. I'll be keeping an eye on this lens to see how the hybrid IS works in the real world.
