no.my point is not that we dont have broadband so we cant see bigger images.my point is there are people sitting out there having an eye on forums like these.a simple right click save as function makes your photo their property.
it was just like that JAL competition from Times of INDIA.it stated that photos sent to this competition will be solely the property of JAL and TOI.what it meant was that even if you fail, you will never know whether they used ur photo in an UGANDA paper.HELL!!
yes i do agree that even 500pixels one can be taken but bigger photo has more people running behind it.
so what you all say?i wanna hear your views on this particular topic.
there have been en number of cases where photos have been stolen and used without permission.

Controversial Discussion Approved
I make it a point to post only small images. Simply because you're making it difficult for the viewer to scan the composition in one go with his eyes. A portrait is no good if the viewer has to scroll one and a half pages to reach from the negative space above the head to the neckline.

+1 to both.
I'd definitely be against posting any decent size pics without the appropriate watermarking (on image, not on border)

i agree, but sometimes watermarks INSIDE the image... i dont prefer that, somehow it distroys your images i feel.
Pro-photographers here in this forum must protect their image from being copied by others.
And i would be happy if my images are atleast published in UGANDA newspapers.:p

watermarking should also be done on a central basis.many do a edge watermarking which is very easily removable by doing some cropping.the very basis of watermarking is avoiding ur photo getting printed.the opacity and scale of watermark differs from photographer to photographer.
there are a lot of instances where papers have been stealing pictures from sites particularly flickr and stuff.its not only INDIA but worldwide this has been going on.
so we do need to protect ourselves.

Forget Uganda, there is a case with a known friend on a public forum, who basically used a photo off two bikers who'd gone to a remote himalayan destination without their permission in Navbharat times!!!

Yes, true that the photographs can be used without the consent or knowledge of the photographer, if it is posted in higher resolution. But, posting in too small a size is as good as not posting at all! I mean, the whole idea of posting a photograph is to show it to others. Now, when these "others" (the rest of us) cannot really view the photographs clearly enough, then I don't see any reason one should post pictures at all! A small resolution image is as good as not posting it.
On the other hand, there have been a few cases whereby someone/ some organization has actually used images without ANY knowledge of it being used by the photographer, which is simply illegal, and not done. But, then again, in this country atleast no-one cares. The only real solution to this seemingly growing problem would be watermarking the picture from the middle of the picture, I guess. That ways, we can appreciate the details in anvancy's macros, and not really spoil the fun of seeing a larger resolution version of his bugs. ;) :D Yes, those BIG watermarks running through the pictures look downright ugly, but I would prefer it that way than posting thumbnail sized images!

LOL! Love the honesty!:cool::D:)
I used to watermark my images. Not anymore. Simply because I have applied a creative commons license to them in good faith.
Also, the medium size option that flickr provides seems to be the right size for posting on forums. Anything bigger causes page stretching and honestly, I can do without that. If one really wants to post a bigger image, why not use the attachment option?

Nice discussion and I'd like to take the mid path here. IMO 1024*x is a little too large and 500*x sometimes comes across as thumbnails on a 24" display :p
800*X seems to be the best (At least that's what I think) since it's a perfect compromise between both. I'm ok with people stealing my pics as long as they're using it for their personal use (One random guy even created an S40V5 theme outta my pics!)
