On Wednesday, 22 July 2009, a total eclipse of the sun will be visible from within a narrow corridor, which traverses a third of the Earth.

Partial eclipses of the sun pale in comparison to the overwhelming spectacle of a total solar eclipse!

This total solar eclipse will be of longest duration of the 21st century being 6 minutes 38 seconds at the point of maximum eclipse.

The moon will eclipse the sun as seen from India, some parts of the Japanese islands, China and Pacific Ocean.

The eclipse begins on the 22nd of July 2009 at around 5:30 am IST in India and spends almost two hours passing the subcontinent. The path of totality will pass through central India passing over Surat, Ujjain, Baroda, Bhopal, Patna, Darjeeling, and Dibrugarh in the far east. It will start off on the west coast of India and travel north east across the sub-continent passing over Varanasi and Darjeeling lasting for a duration of 4 minutes, then onward through Bhutan and Bangladesh till it reaches China.

The Total Eclipse will, however, not be visible from Kolkata, it will be around 90% (“TSE July09” attached).

Keeping in view the prevailing weather conditions along the path of totality and altitude of the sun at the time of the epoch of the eclipse, it appears that the chances of viewing the eclipse from Indian parts are very less.

The Total Eclipse of the Sun on 22nd July, is Shown in Full Animated format in the Link below. Do Check it out if possible, its really very beautiful.

Please be warned that one should Never Ever Look Directly at the Sun especially the Partial Phase, through Unprotected Eyes or Home brewn Filtering mechanisms...

Please check out this article for Safe Methods of Viewing A Solar Eclipse (http://www.perkins-observatory.org/eclipsesafety.html#methods).

Hope we might get an opportunity to observe one of the most spectacular event in the field of astronomy this century...

-Vicky

So, how many of you will be there to capture this rare event?

Even if the weather is good, how many of us has the equipment to capture the images? I, for one, neither do have a 400-600mm lens (or bigger) neither a telescope! :p :D

Your S3 IS should be more than capable of capturing it:)

i missed it .. Taregana (district name-Masaurhi) is my countryside. This eclispe thing at taregana was a news to me and I had to read it twice to make it sure. Seems that place was packed with scientists across the world .. I really missed a golden chance..

I missed it .. Anyways I am proud to be called as Tareganian :)

@ Abhinav : Some beautiful shots there. Loved all of them.

@ Surya : Awesome shots! You were at the right place at the right time! Your 'Ring of fire' shot is my favorite.

Checking out your exif, i'm sure you used sime kind of very dark filter to get such exposure settings. And it must have been the filter that got you this beautiful color. Solar Filter or ND filter?

@Vicky, Thanks for your compliment...Yes this was taken using a Solar filter, meant for the purpose....and imported...It will give max performance for photography.

I was located on a beach @ Dhanushkodi, Rameshearam. On the central line of Eclipse...It was a wonderful experience with temp. dipping drastically as the totality happened, the light fading marginally.

Visually it was spectacular, and the longest ANNULAR ECLIPSE. which lasted for about 10 min, and the total eclipse time from first contact to last contact lasted for about 4 hrs.

The next longest ANNULAR ECLIPSE. is at 3036 AD...So we have to wait...:(:(
