@Vicky: That's really surprising Vicky! I always thought that an "L" series lens (the 400L in this case) MUST be the sharper one when compared to ANY third party Sigma or Tamron lenses!
Vicky
07-13-2009, 03:36 PM
Which means you were pretty close to this fella while you shot him! How close?
I think you're confused here:)
When I say that this photo is a 100% crop, it means that on the original 15mp ( 4152 x 3168pixels) file, the subject occupied this many exact pixel (650 x 725pixels, 0.47mp) of space. That means the subject filled only around 3% of the frame... this would mean that the subject was either pretty far away or very tiny in size or both..
I must have been around 25~30ft from it... and these are really tiny in size.. even slightly smaller than the common pigeon..
Vicky

Nah, its not always that simple... first of all, this is a macro lens... and macro lens are among the sharpest of all lenses in the market today... and second, maybe my copy is exceptional;)
I haven't done any controlled testing yet, but the 100% crops from this lens just look like they are in a league of their own:)
Remember the 100% crops of the pigeon eye :)

I had figured that. What I had not figured was the 25 feet distance. Which for me is a very close distance for an owl to remain still. I am surprised at that.

Thanks Vicky, rio ....as kris said its red wattle lapwing...a very noisy bird....I have a story of this fearless bird which I witnessed. I shall narrate it in my next post...
Regarding the strange pattern I my pic....Its no filter effect nor deliberately included....
Its very strange that these pattern appears ...looks like diagonal lines...in the BG...
I have discussed with some experts...they point it out to the UV FILTER that is plonked on the lens...
I have not done any serious work to evaluate it without the filters...but have to do it...to sort it out....
I am not sure weather its with the lens or the filter...but majority of the discussion pointed it to filter...which is causing this FRINGE effect...
I sincerely hope its got to do with the filter...which I mainly use it as dust protector.

In my last trip to Bharathpur Sanctuary, I was walking alone in a forest trail early morning to spot some birding activity...
It was pretty silent and a long trail....Suddenly the to my right I heard a noise coming towards me. from the thick under cover bushes and swamp area, there came a Jackal running for its life....
I stood still trying to get my sense back as to what is happening...
The Jackal was unaware of my presence and got even more scared....seeing me. It just made a U-turn and headed back to the bush scampering thro the swamp and water... which was followed by this Red wattle Lapwing...chasing the jackal...
I mustered my courage in this few seconds of action to take some series shots of the Jackal scampering for life...( shall post it ).
I realized later as to what had happened....This Jackal was trying to snatch a Lapwing egg from its nest...
Lapwing's do nest on the ground and they guard it fiercely.
The lapwing made the Jackal to run for its life..
I HAD THE CHANCE TO WITNESS THIS WONDERFUL EVENT OF NATURE....

The lapwing made the Jackal to run for its life..
Lovely story. I had a similar incident. Just that it was not a jackal, it was ME! And it was not in a sanctuary, it was on my rooftop. And I was not trying to steal their eggs. I was just watering my plants! A little distance away, on the elevated portion on top of the roof, they had built a nest. And they kept attacking me for 3 days!

I feel it must be the UV filter.. which brand is it anyway? I think you need to do the same shot with / without the filter to get this straight.
Because whatever it is, it definitely is very distracting:o
Wow! That must have been an awesome episode to witness:)

This is not as good as your earlier posts. I have enjoyed them more. Here the spoonbill (correct me Prakash if I am wrong) has moved its beak at even 1/800 of a second. I personally like sharp crisp images. Though there are people who have developed a style with moving blurry images as well.

^^. I am not finding the exposure to be correct, Similar problem in the earlier shot also.. If there is a harsh light condition then try to underexpose the shots and adjust them later in PP.
I think your existing Nikkor lens is better than the APO. Use it the right way. If at all u need a tele macro at a cheap price and good performance then go for Tamron 90mm f/2.8 .

U have to concentrate on a species for some time to get the required shots...

in pune there was a case recently where the pond was sprayed for flu precautions and some of these who had homes near the pond died.its like the concerned authorities(in this case the forest)do care about these things.but the central municipal doesnt.

what do you think titus ? where else i can find some wildlife @ this desert ? :p
dubai zoo ofcourse. :D
Thanks, vicky. Yep, I felt it was underexposed too. Was shooting handheld and the bird was in the shade, so didn't dare to push things more. Tried exposing it a bit more in PP, but didn't really like what I saw. :(
If you have any suggestions on how to improve shots in such conditions, I'd be delighted to learn! :)

Hi rio, this bird is cooling off its heels in the hot desert Zoo...!!
Your efforts are highly appreciated....but, pic. are too soft or its just not sharp..
I dont know whether its the technique or the lens.....I have a feeling that some sigma lens is very soft at its long end....
My personal experience with 170-500 Sigma.......is soft pic....
If you have the option...why dont you try Nikon 300mm...and find out the difference...
I am only concerned for the hard effort U put into each pic. and the time involved....After all the end result should be pleasing....
Don't worry I have gone thro this...and still continue ...when I see better pic. than mine....
I still have a long way to go...to get that.."PERFECT PICTURE".
Pls. dont mistake me for the comment..... U have the potential to churn out sharp and crisp images...Be it Zoo...or wild...:)

i dont mind. its nice to hear comments from you all whatever it is.
the main problem was the grills around the zoo. it was really hard to take pictures avoiding those grills.
I too feel the images are bit soft. may be because i was there in the evening and the lighting was poor so was shooting @ less than 1/120 and higher ISO.
I will go next weekend to shoot these again but in the morning. lets see how it comes.
and ya i used noiseninja to reduce noise may be that too cause for softness.

Brilliant shot Surya! Panning it seems.
A little bit of panning.....The most challenging part is...You just cant predict when these guys dip and where they re-appear...
The catch and swallow...happens in just a few moments....you have to be ready to compose...Getting the focus on these slender birds is difficult...If you miss it..U end up focusing water or the background..
They are constantly moving....turning their head scouting for food..
Lighting is very very crucial along with proper BG...:)
