View Full Version : [photoDuel]: Selective Colouring

This is one type of post processing which can be easily overdone. What I do is, slightly desaturate the coloured part so that it doesn't look too out of place.
Here's my first entry on this thread.

Thanks for the approval and appreciation Ken :)
The only selection I made on this photograph was of the sky to darken it.
The colour of the cart was achieved using the History brush. Another alternative would be to create a duplicate layer and use the Eraser tool on the upper layer. :)

thats way better i guess :)
play with the brightness and contrast of the coloured layer and see the results , reducing saturation 2 steps down will work.

How does this look for selective coloring ... The front edge overblown white is because i am still learning to use spot metering on 400d which only has a partial metering.

well firstly i suggest to use adobe lightroom for this purpose...its easy and is specially designed for photo editing. all the colours can be altered separately. check this

...all the work done in lightroom()
in photoshop, try image>adjustments>selective color

bhai log , please , kuch to bolo :(

well many aspects to it.

masking is the simplest.

LR is the next simple thing.if you observe that he has kept red and green colors and desaturated the rest.this can be easily done in LR thru the color sliders.at times for ease of use LR is faster and easier.PS is more detailed and has more edge.

Nik's, Anvay has outlined almost exactly what I've done. Earlier I tried achieving the same effect using either history brush or another method who's technical name I don't know where one desaturated layer is put on top and then using the paint brush we selectively saturate what we want.

Over here, I've just desaturated everything except Red and Green in Photoshop. I guess that would not have worked had there been other greens in the shot. :)

Correct me if im wrong guys, I'm just like the dude in my avtaar trying to learn :D

For this photograph, this method worked fine except for the area around the Ninja's seat where you can see some spillage. Inanimate objects with equal light fall off in all areas are best subjects for the method that you used. Otherwise the good old history brush or masking technique is your best bet.

i want to add...
lightroom and PS can be used side by side to get the neatness. desat the colors in LR to get the selective coloring you desire and then apply the masking in PS.
simple thing to do...
make a duplicate layer and desat the original(rear) layer. now use the eraser tool over the front layer where ever you find the inconsistency.
here is an example of what i am talking about.(it may not be neat enough but that is because of my lack of patience...<5 min work:p)
LR helps to keep the feather touch easily and neatly at the edges!!!

thought of some unusual subject for desaturation!!!

I think this particular photo might work better if you reversed the two. The wood looks like well, wood, more or less the same. And there are quite a few elements involved as well. So doesnt really work for me personally.

actually the main purpose behind these two is to convey the use of lightroom.
the area behind the bushes is easily desaturated with detail using it.

beauty reflection on the bike.inviting look.:)

@ken: a mask is an item that u wear at parties :p.
in photoshop masking is putting a sheet on a particular section to avoid any editing on it.so example u put a tape on nav's shot above..say mask the bike, and then edit to the rest, the bike will not be affected by the edit since its masked.

vicky and sunny should start thread on basic PS.

I like selective coloring because it creates a nice contrast between BW and color. Here's a recent one from my side,

Well done mate...

P.S. I think you'll get better response if you start embedding your photos in the post rather than attaching then as clickable thumbnails..

I edited your post the way I explained and the way Vicky asked.

Just see how much more appreciation you get for shots like these if you embed your shots in the body of the post.
