Many still think phones are totally crap as camera, but in fact you can make some great pics with it :) Show us phones can make nice pics in this tread! I'll kick off:

Here's something I shot 3 years ago using a Nokia 6600.

And one can't really expect quality pics from a 640x480 VGA camera in insufficient light, right? ;)

Thanks Ken. And yes, it is a very good phone. However it is also 2 years old, hence I'd rather suggest you to go for the N85 which is similarly priced and is more advanced w.r.t. features (display, battery life, newer software, Ngage capability) There are other '5mp' Nokia phones like the N79, N82, and the N96. But IMO, The N85 is best VFM right now.

Keep exploring the different options offered by the software, Praveen. There's no hard rule on how to use them. Keep tweaking until the pics look right in your eyes.

P.S. the JPEG artifacts that you see in the dark areas is thanks to retarded Picasa.

I'd prefer to post in Flickr itself, but the RSS feed from the picasa page goes to the Sony Ericsson page.

Here's the actual image:

The film grain has been added in post as is usual with my workflow.

You're right btw, the Satio is dangerously close to P&S's when it comes to image quality.

Xavier
10-01-2009, 06:23 PM
This is really impressive and similar phones from SE and other manufacturers would make compact P&S' obsolete in the next few years. I just wish that they don't fall prey to the ugly megapixel farce (12mp on a tiny sensor is way too much!) though. I've read somewhere that normal P&S sensors max out at 3mp. And I believe the phone cameras have even smaller sensors.

synn
10-01-2009, 06:30 PM
Haha, funny you said that because here's a 100% crop from that same image

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Sd41_ofiNpk/SsQyabExwRI/AAAAAAAAATc/8VzFtl5M3zQ/s800/5_crop.JPG

That sort of pixel level detail is simply amazing and unheard of in a phone.

The 12.1MP do help, but only when there's adequate light. For those used to DSLRs, lowlight noise is a bit too much, but it is still bearable within the class though.

Not really. The N82 had the best camera module in the entire market for a long time before it was replaced by the high end Samsungs and SEs. Nokia did have a slump after that though. They weren't really competing with others and it took them 2 years to come up with a good cameraphone in the N86 which is one of the best camera phones in its class.

I know how that feels, since I'm an N81 user. The last time I used it to click pics was errrmm.. 4 months ago :p
And the 5530 is slightly better than the 5800 in almost every aspect except for the display size and 3G.
