Holi in India was celebrated this year on the 11th of March, 2009. It is a festival that we all know that mark the end of winter and the arrival of spring and the harvest of the Ravi crop. And various other symbolic meanings are associated with this incredible festival where young and old, boys and girls, men and women mingle to play and sprinkle each other with colours of every hue in a gesture of conviviality and happiness.

On such a day it is not advisable to leave your home with expensive photographic equipment. But I did spend Holi in my old Campus where I spent 7 years of my academic life, at the Jawaharlal Nehru University Campus with a simple P&S camera; a Sony DSC-W70, and managed to take a few shots of some revelers of this incredible festival.

And C&C welcome of course:

A slight OT- Is that your blue siena?

Nice shots but lil generic though. Capturing expression of people in holi is quite difficult.
At my place i.e. Ranchi, holi is celebrated in a quite different way.
There are two rounds of play, one in the morning called as 'Geela Holi' (wet holi) and one in the evening called as 'Abeer Holi' (Abeer is gulaal) ..

So holi starts early in the morning say 7 AM where mostly water based colors are used and no rules are applied. Its liquors everywhere and people dance like crazy in intoxication. Also there are experts who sing folks called as 'Holi' . Those who resist has to face dire consequences such as a dip in color tank, colors to be applied on his inaccesible body parts etc. So in a way its more of like mad.
The wet holi gets over before 1st half. Now there is a break of say 2-3 hours when people get cleaned using all sort of soaps (including Rin, surf etc.) and they get ready for the evening bash. People dress up in new clothes and get as decent as they can. Youngers put a pinch of gulaal on the feet of elders and get blessings. The overall atmospehere looks more the way eid is celebrated. Gents in kurta ethnics and Ladies in ghagra, chunni etc.
Flow of liquor is not stopped although its a declared dry day.
I remember celebrating it in full swing 5 years back. Dunno when I'll celebrate it again the way I did it with my old chaddi friends :(:( ..

I'm not really a big fan of festivals and celebrations and the above pic is the only one I liked. The rest, as SP pointed out, are pretty generic and a P&S camera with its shutter lag can be frustrating to capture the precise moments. However I agree about not carrying expensive equipment when they can so easily get screwed in the confusion.

I'd love to click something like a bunch of kids playing with coloured water using their water pistols at a very high shutter speed. That's something that would really do it for me. Check this pic. It's not a holi pic and it's not mine. But I love the idea behind it.

Thanks SP. Totally agree about the generic bit! I was just trying my hand for the first time in capturing Holi "moments".

Thanks for sharing the cultural bit about how Holi is celebrated at Ranchi. Sounds mad but VERY interesting.

OT: yes, that is my Blue one!

In this country I definitely like two festivals. Holi and Diwali of course. I totally agree with both of you as the photographs being very generic! I could not come up with anything better. But thanks, for the comments. I will try again. Lets see what comes next year!

Your shot is quite terrific. If only it had been a Holi shot...

hey this is amazing shot. Must have been a fast lens (f/1.8 to 2.8) with a fast equipment (D300 or 50D ++) ..
I dont think my D40 can do this (might be )

Sure it can. Only there will probably be a little bit more grain.

LOL, It's shot using a pretty old 20D and one of the cheapest telephoto zooms, the Sigma 70-300 @ f/8 ;)

Even a P&S like S3IS could do this... 1/2000, F/8, ISO400:) Most of the times, its the idea and not the equipment:)
