I have zilch idea about flash photography and its power settings! I am just giving what I feel seems wrong and maybe can be rectified.
If you ask me, in addition to the bottom flash, I would not mind a side-on flash as well reflecting off the lights highlighting them!

using off camera flash photography requires time and patience.
power settings are basic how intense you want the flash.
the distance also plays a crucial role in creating a depth of field.the near the flash to the subject the more powerful and more distance less powerful.
strobist.com is one heaven.
there were endless possibilities of lighting this.like i said this shot is a merge of 11 different flash vantage points shots.

with my current setup, ill have to be a mad scientist.
i dont have the luxury of DSLR+hot shoe+mounting+triggering with some PWs or cactuses.
the 283(which is of my friend) is uncontrollable regarding power is concerned.the 285 is better.
and currently i dont have 8k bucks to order a 285.so a huge remote possibility of me ordering one.
even if i get two flashes ill still need optical triggers so that one flash triggers the other.and two flashes become heavy(as in flash) when light painting is considered.
getting flash and triggering it from one point is one way to do it.getting one flash triggering it by either long exposure and you moving triggering it in different vantage points or separate shots if recycle time is huge.both the methods yield different results.
if anybody can donate me money ill be happy to take it.:p
Techno:ill be waiting.

Ouch, I am ashamed to say that my camera is left untouched for close to a month now, I just dont get enough scenes to shoot as in there are the same old places where it strikes me to take a pic & I have already taken a lot there.
Gotta get geared to visit a temple which is like 20 odd kms from my place take some snaps.

The 3rd one is Ok!
And I do not see much point in the 1st and 2nd ones.
I do not mean to be harsh. And I know that this is not photocritique. But this is a DUEL! And there are some fabulous photographs by Techno, Motorcycho, Synn and others!
Keep trying. You will get there. I personally cannot take very good car photographs.

clicking cars at events is a major haul.non controlled crowds just keep pouring leaving photographers thin air to shoot.a better perspective could have made it more pleasing.sort of below hips,to create stance and aggression that the car is showing.
Also the way you tried to cover up the plate, there are simple methods.
in photoshop, with the rectangle selection tool, select the number plate, transform it so that the selection matches plate angle etc.
Then take the eye dropper tool.Select a color in the number plate.these run from many shades of either blue or green depending on light.once you select a shade from the number plate, just either fill it or brush it.Done.
The second method is also simple.Select the numbers including the spaces in between for example like in 8 or 6 etc.and then brush or fill with the shade selected. This way you are painting only the numbers and not the plate.

Surely would love to meet up for a photoshoot. Krishna would be game anyday, but I don't think he'd be coming in a Palio, boy is upgrading to a Baleno mostly.
EDIT:
Another shot with a slightly different perspective and a bit overload of underexposure (Dunno why but I always just love to overboard in post with under exposing my pics :D). But I somehow like the final underexposed outcome, kindda added to the chill factor in the pic.

Indeed. I also forgot to mention.
@Techno this is a real amazing shot. Even without treatment I liked it.
If you want I can give a very small suggestion. You should set an angle such that both the cars in front were spaced equally. I would have tried to get fau-we logo of both the cars in frame.
With same sharpness and angle I think Polo is a killer subject to shoot.
Still I love the shot.

Thanks a lot for the tip, I tried that actually but there was not enough space, besides lot of people were walking in between (have a few shots which got spoiled due to this) So just shot a few shots & picked the best one (I have one with both logos but have people in between & it was shaken)

I know this is not critique but I will do it nonetheless...
First shot is not bad but it gives the impression that the Punto is made to go anywhere, image of a rally vehicle!
Second shot is simply amazing. I am sure you have played with the WB to get those bluish tinge to create that ambiance. Whatever, this is a good shot.
OT: Maybe an amazing machine, but the way Skoda apparently fleeces customers during service sessions that it leaves a gaping burning hole in your wallet! But I think you know it already.

09-10-2010, 10:33 AM
@Ken Da: Thanks. The Punto shot was taken that way to symbolize the power output which has been boosted to 90bhp. That is why the title "Power Play". :)
The second shot was clicked late in the evening, at around 5:30pm, and the WB was kept at "Daylight", instead of "Auto" as it was clicked in JPEG instead of RAW. Had it been RAW, it would've been even better, I guess. I also understand that Skoda has one of the worst service back-up in the country, but boy, their vehicles are SUPERB, I tell you; first the Skoda Superb and recently the Skoda Laura - I loved both of them. :)

Somehow I feel that in the Punto shot, the Punto is sort of put/added afterwards in the water. The fall and the punto lines are majorly diagonal. If the fall was kept parallel to the car, then the emphasis would have improved further.
But It is a good shot nonetheless.
The Skoda is Nice!

I feel you could have gone in for an even slower shutter speed for the Punto shot to get that water silkier.
Love the low angle on the Skoda Shot!
P.S. : You seem to be doing quite a lot of 'magazine style' car / bike shots there days... turned into an Auto Journalist or what?

@Vicky: I know I should've gone to even lower shutter speed. Actually, that was shot with the 70-200 at 1/8 seconds, @156mm, hand-held! :D
As for being a journalist, I have been working with an automobile magazine (DREAMCARZ) as their Senior Photographer. :) Hence, the shots!

Ok great. I remember doing a waterfall shot with the 70-200 hand held too. Here (http://www.thephotographer.in/darkroom/showpost.php?p=14778&postcount=6).
Congrats Mr. Senior Photographer!
What you are doing now has been my Dream Job. I really envy you guys... you get to drive and test the best cars in the business, travel to exotic locations in the name of extended tests, attend grand media events in top class locations and the best hotels, and on top of that, you also get PAID for all of this!
I envy you:p

@Ken Da: Thanks. The Punto shot was taken that way to symbolize the power output which has been boosted to 90bhp. That is why the title "Power Play". :)
I thought the Punto was already available with a 90Bhp version!

He has tested all Ducatis, ridden Superbikes on track, shot them to death, driven from Delhi to Bombay and back several times on several vehicles while shooting and writing! And now he is bored! :D :D :D

@Aryan: to be frank, i didnt like the punto shot. at all. Not your class. The skoda is more like it - but a darker more contrasty laura would've been belissimo!!!
The punto shot has a well treated waterfall, but no splashing power, no menacing stance (taken too low) makes it look okie dokie. The same punto splashing through - a la rally style , that would be ... mama mia!

Still it worked out better than what I thought last night. What we need is slower moving traffic with lesser ambient light. Most of the vehicles on that road move at speeds upwards of 80 and the streets are brightly lit for the CWG! Or we wait for a power cut.

I am surprised because I do not remember seeing the M3 which is why I asked the question!
Anyway...
for me the M3 features are washed out. Cannot see the lines on the bonnet. Too over-processed in my opinion.
The Series3 looks good.
The two Audis do not impress me much.
The last Merc AMG SLS, it is an interesting shot, but one cannot make out that it is an SLS! Besides, it is not even the original colour!

OT- People say that the only match to this is (or was) the octavia VRs. Then there is nothing till the 3. Even the Superb and Laura are unable to match the handling. (Japanese are way behind)
Take a drive of this beast, you may get compelled to own one. The dealer themselves told me to rip the TD vehicle as much I can  .. I drove it to 160 max in a stretch of 2+ kms and then ran out of road. Took 10 sec to come to 0 kmph.
I have replaced the stock tyres with Yokohama S-drives so the distance to brake has been reduced even more.

Now I have been observing and watching and reading car photography. One of the basic rules in car photography as a subject is to avoid the clutter.which here the grass is the clutter. If you get what I mean, the grass is creeping all over the car.
So next time try to keep your subject out of all clutter. This does not mean you cant shoot in grass. If you want to, then shift the angle so that the viewer is dragged through the grass and to the car.
Its true that afternoon times are just boring times for car shoots. But you can create drama out of ordinary shots. Thats what I have tried. Now ofcourse I am working on a small resolution so the noise. but you can understand what I want to say. your Linea deserves a better place for a photo shoot.

@Kris, as a photographer I am trying to explore ..and find out in which field I am reasonably good at..!!!
It was a Monsoon ride to a place in Western Ghats, parked the car on the bridge which does not have any side supports...water was flowing in full force just a few feet below..in fact could touch it.
It was over cast and late in the evening...the rain soaked car was an interesting subject..Yes indeed P&S Ixus.

And beware before marrying one.
She is very choosy with what she eats and wears. (Read Yokohama sandals, Sonax makeups, Shell zero-fat food, Petronas roughages) ..
She requires a royal treatment. Keep her happy and she can prove herself the unproven hot on bed.
Period.

First of all, shoot the car when she is sparkling clean.
exceptions are off road cars.
And I also go mad when reflections come in between on the car surface.

How do you eliminate them?

A good CPL filter should eliminate or reduce reflections.

For car shoot reflection are indeed needed to show the contrast and sparkle of the paint. Shoot using soft boxes/CPL and you are doomed.
The picture I have posted has some unwanted reflections of stuffs in background, totally agree. But somehow, as I said, I am trying to maintain the naturalness of the shots these days.
The shots has following adjustments done-
1. Level, Curves, Saturation, Vignette. Constrast/color boosted in-camera.
2. Watermarking.
3. The lighting was harsh in outside. The car was facing the road and inside garage was not lit. I used this opportunity and spot metered on the grill. Thus the background in darker. Later a little play with the vignette tool to add more edge burnt effect.
10 min work.
I can mask the unwanted reflections, but somehow I do not want to manipulate the photo to that extent.
Just Keeping myself away from 'over' editing.

OMG! Some beautiful shots here!!
I searched to see whether there is any existing thread for cars and found this thread... Saw all the pics in one go and then started thinking whether I should post mine or not... :p
Hmm... Anyway, posting some from my end too...

In the colour version the distractions are too evident. I prefer in monochrome.

The first post was on what space? I thought it was selective colouring.
I am on IPS Panel. (Non calibrated of course). The BG on your 2nd shot looks like some shade of light green.

The problem is that I edited the original shot on a friend's PC that had a calibrated Dell Ultrasharp 24" IPS Monitor. Color space was RGB. The edit looked perfect on that monitor! I uploaded the file on to flickr.
But when I got back home and saw the same edited photo on my standard laptop screen, it lacked color, brightness, contrast and that pop which was visible on that Dell Ultrasharp. So i bumped up the saturation (that slightly greenish hue was a result of that), and upped contrast slightly too... converted to sRGB and reposted:cool:

Oh boy! Does that mean that my shots lack colour, brightness, contrast and the "pop" that is usually visible on my IPS Screen? I have almost never seen my shots on any other screen.
