View Full Version : Canon 450D(XSi) or 500D(T1i) ... Choice made
Hi Guys,
I am completely new to photography and have a sony point and shoot. Planning to get a DSLR and have zeroed in on either the 450D (XSI) or the 500D (T1i). Now i know that this is not a apple to apple comparison and the 500D is a new, better model. I have compared the specs of the camera and can see the obvious difference - HD Video and the technical differences (which i don't fully understand) example - higher ISO, processor, Face recognition, etc etc...
Now in a non technical way can someone explain me the difference and if i should consider paying extra for the 500D or is it not worth the money specially if i am new to DSLRs.
Is it much better and i should pay the extra bit for a longer lasting camera... or am i just paying for Video mode. Can used the saved money to buy a new lens.
Also should i get either of the camera's with bill or with out (huge price difference - again can buy a new lens). will warranty matter.. do these camera's get spoiled easily.
Cheers & Thanks
J

like u have pointed out.HD video and increased MP differentiate these two models.processor also is new but the 450D has been a huge hit.so if u really want HD then invest in a camcorder.cause even if its HD its gonna gobble up your space.
my verdict is for the 450D.the 500D is a 50D in a 450D body.

My suggestion exactly! Either get the 450D or if you can stretch your budget by a fair margin, get the 50D!
But, you say you are new to the world of digital SLRs. I hope you have considered the fact that you would eventually be spending most of the money in getting lenses.

If I were to ask you, if you had the moolah and you wanted to upgrade owning currently the 400D, which one would you go for if any?

According to me the HD video capability of 500D is more of eyewash - it cannot be compared to a HD camcorder for many reasons.
Also more that Canon will not make products which affect its camcorder market which are currently competing head to head with Sony.
The one thing that I really liked about 500D is the high ISO capability but have to really see the difference.
50D's ISO till 3200 is not significantly great than 40D so don’t know about 500D.
If you have a budget for 500D I would personally go for 40D - a better camera with faster AF(all 9 cross type),faster FPS ,rugged/weather sealed body, better camera and shutter life etc..
Or if you really want to go for 500D then wait for some time to let the prices go down.
On second thought, how about getting a 400D and saving money for lenses. Bodies’ age soon – lenses stay forever.

The 50D undoubtedly; no full frames for me at this time atleast. I love the APS-C sensored cameras. Where else would you get something like 640mm out of a 400mm lens but on a 1.6x crop factored Canon. :D
Ofcourse, the loss in the wide angle department is something sad, but then again there is the 10-22mm lens for that too! ;)

Hence this answer makes it pretty clear, that for most of us it is not really much of a point comparing between the 450D and the 500D. Rather it is better to talk between the 450D and the 50D if I get the drift of this discussion right.
And this brings us to what kind of difference of price between the two? I guess quite a bit... the 50D being "nearly" double that of the 450D?
Guys the MRP for the 50D is for Rs 75,000 and for the 500D is Rs 53,000. The MRP on the 450D is Rs 46000. I am getting the 450D for Rs 40,000 with bill ( this includes 2 GB memory card, Canon Bag, Canon Photographers jacket, Live View Screen guard and 2 free photography classes at Canon Studio :-).... most of which is quite useless i think). I don't know how much the dealers will sell the 500D once it hits the shelves in a few days.. my guess being a new product .. not too much lesser than the MRP. I have no idea about the 50D price from a dealer cause never considered it.
Now all these prices are official with bills, i have not visited any grey market stores.. but plan to visit Palika Bazaar tomorrow and see at what prices i can get all these cameras.
Either ways the 50D is way more expensive (Rs 20,000 more than the 500D) .. i started with a 25,000 budget and have moved up bit by bit.. but cant spend that kind of money.
So that brings us back to my first question 450D or 500D.
Also should i venture out to the grey market and buy a camera with out bill.. which means it will have no warranty. Is that a bad idea or nothing really goes bad with the camera unless u r really unlucky.

As for the choice between 450D and 500D - Have you read the comparative reviews of both.

Wont a FF camera pic cropped to 62.5% give the exact same image as we get from an APSC camera?

I still feel that you should go for the 450D unless you absolutely want Video. If you have the extra cash get yourself a good glass instead, a 85mm f1.8, legendary lens which will stand you in stead for 15 years at least!
In the grey market, nothing really goes bad unless you are REALLY unlucky.

Yes it does. This is what I have been saying for years. Crop a FF and you get the APSC image. We have discussed this at length in another thread, have to dig it out from somewhere. Powerslave had even presented charts.
Let me add more confusion to my life.. i also checked out the 1000D... whats the review on that. I have read the net for reviews .. i wanted to know from the guys who are using it.
Lets say that i am evaluating the 450D over the 500D.... then should i seriously consider the 1000D also.. don't see too much difference. I don't mind paying extra for the 450 .. but should i.
Remember i am new to this and if you think people change the body every few years.. then should i put money in a good lens.
Sorry .. i am all over the place in my brain ... :o

The 1000D is also a good camera, but the kit lens of the 1000D (18-55mm) is the 'old' one, WITHOUT IS (Image Stablization), while the 450D/ 500D has the new IS lens. :)
And before you ask - YES, IS does help quite a lot.

Congratulations on your buy. And the lenses too. Now you need to show us what you can do with this.
