Photo Critique Approved

I liked all the photographs posted here. All of them are pretty decent photographs. Now here comes the critique part...

I liked n°1 a lot, lovely angle, beautiful light, nice colours. If only it could have been more on the road, more of tarmac, it would have been better still.

N°2 Panning shot is superb, worth putting on the panning shots thread. Again, I feel that that it would have been better still if you managed to get a clear shot of the car. Part of the front wheel is getting covered with the shrubs.

N°3 is very good too. Though a little bit more closer and a little bit more of the car would have been even better.

N°4 is definitely not up to the quality and treatment compared to the others. This is not to take away that it is a good photograph. But it is definitely not as good as the others. Rear wheel is partly seen. It is covered by this culvert kind of thing which is shabbily painted. Again had you got a clear entire shot of the car with just the hills in the background and a little bit of the Eucalyptus or not at all, it would have made for a good "ad" kinda photograph looking at the lovely warm tones that you had at your disposal AFA light is concerned.

N°5 is very good too. Think of a way of lighting the right side of car and enhance the reflections with PP and reducing the strong shadow from under the car.

Overall, I feel a very good shooting session, very rewarding. Thanks for sharing this with us.

@motorcycho - I hope u dont mind if I give you my personal honest critique.
All the photos looks like a conventional Auto India shots to me. I mean there is nothing new I can see.
Hope you dont take me wrongly, but I dont like the standards of quality of photos in Overdrive/Auto India or any Indian mags here. I mean a lot can be done but they seem to have adopted a comfort zone.
U can easily see the difference in the treatment given in auto magazines abroad.

People will not mind if you try some awkward angles, and do some PP.
Also time-of-the-day factor matters a lot when it comes to automobiles.
I believe Sunny can give more inputs on this.

Guess i made my point without breaking any heart. All I want to say that lets up our standards to prove ourselves internationally.

I like no1 only bcoz of its sharpness.

Thanks a lot ken and SP!!!
I totally agree wit you SP on the kind of work that goes into these magazines!!
Its very conventional and things haven't changed in years!! Another thing being the amount of time we are given with the vehicle, and the amount they spend on such a shoot.
The above shoot had to be completed in an hour, and the time given was 12 noon...The worst time we can think of shooting!!
No. 3 and 4 are something i have never done before, Hanging from another car and stretching my hands lower to the ground n clicking without getting to see in the viewfinder.

Thanks Ken for the tips, will keep those in mind during the next shoot.:)
and SP will put up some more pics of another car very soon, hope u like those..:)

M glad that people liked my lectures ;) (maybe for the first time though :p)..

@motorcycho, a slight OT here- Automobile is in my blood. My mom says that when I was 2 years old then a slight view of a car photo in the newspaper would make me sit on that newpaper for long, and I use to sing zooozoooo, screaming I am sitting over a car. Well that was iritating for others, but I enjoyed the moment, reserving the newspaper for long and evetually stamping a mark of my back over the paper.
I remembered staring a maruti-1000 for more than 3 hours continuous when it was parked before my house gate (owner wanted a tree shade to save the paint of his NEW car) , I ended up with fever due to sunstroke..

A career in automobile photography is everyday welcomed by me ;) , no matter if it fetches me lesser moolah than my current job :o ...

Lets come to point now-
Waiting to see more shots from your side buddy.

given the situation of harsh light, nice shots.

but even i feel that you can run slight PP or LR on this.next time try to take shots with direct flash mode.yea it will sound downright silly but try it to check for differences.

I tried that, but the flash would bounce back and really overexpose specific parts! maybe i should have used flash from various other angles :o

@SP
I'll get back to you on that :)
If these guys need a "guest photographer" in B'lore, I know who to get in touch with ;)

I Like #1 and I really like the idea and effort behind #3. Almost looks like a rig shot:)

For #5, I would suggest you crop about an inch and a half from the bottom.

Overall, great work!
