So, Ken here has been demanding that I start a still life photo duel sometime soon. The man can be very persuasive when he wants to be, so here goes!

Photograph anything that can't move on it's own will. I'll start things off with something I call "Sunday":

Still Life Photo Duel Approved

Lets see what I can dig out. "Sunday" looks nice for the moment.

Here is my contribution...
After a Saturday evening "sloshed" out at a photographer friend's place, for his and his wife's b'day, Sunday afternoon, after they came to their senses... I always sober, took them for a drive. I wanted to see how fast I could take his Magnum. And I achieved 195+.

Then we stopped for a refreshing drink. And while we waited, this is what I captured with my Sony:

Entitled: Here Comes the Sun

Sony DSC W70
f/7.1, 1/200Sec

I know that this forum is supposed to be a photography forum but the "195+" is all I can see in the above post. And what Magnum? Dodge?
*/

synn's shot in the opening post has a different feel to it, perhaps because the color pallete prominently consisting of a few solid colors.

Whats the difference between ABSTRACT and STILL LIFE
Here most of the photos appear to me as abstract
can some one provide me a definition between these 2 things ?

I did a wiki to get the meaning and it seems there are more confused people than me when it comes to defining Still Life (as wellas abstract)Photograhy.

Can we have a short discussion??? [Please!]

Can't say much really. It is not terrible. But it is not brilliant either. I feel it takes up too much space to the left. I think I would have centred it! Exposure however is spot on. There is another way of doing it I feel. Very low exposure all around with a spot exposure on your subject.

More I look at it, more I like it. But I still feel that if you had some external lighting, like a spot lighting, I don't know the correct terminology here, it would look better. With the surroundings darkened! But then I might have detractors who would say that since this is a dark subject, it would look better against a clear background the way you have shot it! No harm in trying...

good photos by the way

Thank you, am glad you like them :).

It's actually a very very small utensil, usually used to store milk while serving tea. Shot with a macro lens and cropped for composition, hence it looks like a jug!

I used food color for the water and dropped a coin (I think, don't quite remember). The camera was mounted on a tripod and was on a ten second timer, the utensil was placed on a seamless white paper (A4 sheet) and I used one hand to hold the flash (YN 460, triggered wirelessly with a sonia trigger) pointing towards the background and dropped the coin when the camera was about to click. Took me a couple of attempts to get it right. Let me know if this was clear or if you have any other questions, will be glad to help out :).

Those are really good Veereshai, mind sharing your setup?

Setup? Umm, I usually use two YN460 flashes for my work. One of the things that has really really helped me understand how to light is a book called "Light science and magic". It's a must read book to get amazing results with simple lighting :). Trust me, in photography, nothing matters more than the light. You can get AMAZING shots even with cheap lens and great lighting :).

For the guitar shot, I used one flash to light the guitar and another flash kept behind the guitar on the floor and pointed towards the wall. The wall was off-white but because of the flash power, it looks white and I had to clean up parts of the wall in photoshop :).

Veereshai,

I've rarely commented on your stuff - but this set is SIMPLY AWESOME. Professional setup. I'd +1 to Powerslave here!!

Thank you Hitanshu :). Am really glad that you like my photographs.

Hey Vicky, nice shot! As you read recently, I gave in to my craving for f/1.4 with the Rokinon. I'm wondering what you think about the Sigma 30 f/1.4 and the 50mm f/1.4?

I have had my eye on those for quite some time. I might get rid of my nifty and the Rokinon and buy one of those.

HDR right?

Just get the leaves out and your photo qualifies for "Still life"! :)

Or maybe it is fine. Since one shoots apples and oranges in still life too!

Thanks mohit and ken.

@ ken: I think the leaves and it's shadows adds some character to the photo. I have a separate "bulb only" photo but I feel its a bit "incomplete".

Thanx Hitanshu for the tip will keep in mind . As I had to use a torch to get the shadow in front just couldn't handle the darkness behind the ring

If by artifacts you are referring to those which are present on the lower right and left sides of the book, then those were created on purpose to make that photo imperfect. I personally like the metallic smooth look of the book.

There is no subject in your photograph. Even in still life, there is a well defined subject. Your photograph looks like a mixed bag of half objects with no clear subject. The photograph shows lack of clarity on behalf of the photographer.

Thanks Henry! There was just a single source of light through a frosted glass north facing window... I was experimenting by placing the twins in different angles relative to the window, and I liked this the best. Later on, I read that the great master Rembrandt used this technique :)
