Folks -

Need advice on the best place to look out for camera equipment at singapore. Also, how are the prices compared to India? I might be looking to get a super telephoto (100 - 400 L) and an UWA (14mm f2.8 L) from there.

the 100-400 costs approx 1.12 lakhs and 14mm f2.8 costs 1.18 lakhs (official canon prices) here.

Also would like general advice - My memory is just not thinking anything apart from lenses :D. If you were an avid photographer - what would you like from Singapore?

Thanks a lot!

Hey there,

The two shops you may wanna check out for reasonably priced stuff are

Alan Photo (http://www.alanphoto.com.sg/)

and

John 3:16 (http://www.john316photo.com/)

The 14mm costs approx. 91k here. You can find detailed price lists here as a guide:

Hope that helps.

I have heard that Singapore is actually a great place to get cameras and stuff...

However, just do not blindly go by the widest and longest lenses.
the 14mm is a full frame lens, and would not serve you very well unless you also use a full frame camera. (if you have concrete upgrade plans to FF cam, getting it would sure be nice, otherwise the 10-22 EF-S will serve you better for wide-angle on 1.6x crop (your current cam and all XXXD and XXD series canons))

the 100-400 ofcourse is a wonderful lens, and perhaps the longest lens that anyone as a hobbyist would need. (640mm equiv on the crop cameras is real good, but those lengths are only needed for serious birding - and perhaps not for general photography). one of the four 70-200 lenses would be much more usable in general situations and walk-around, and also are easier to handle because of the ring zoom rather than the pull zoom of the 100-400. If however, birding is your forte, go for it, you'd love the reach.

I guess what I mean to say is, before making a purchase decision, know what you want to photograph, instead of buying all focal lengths and then being confused which to use when...

Totally agree with Psycho there:

The 14mm is a Great lens for FF. But the 10-22 EF-S is great too! Depends on which way we are headed, APS-C or FF.

Better ask price locally. Dont know about other states, but here in Punjab, prices vary from what stated online and what is available locally.

@synn - thanks very much! that was exactly what I was looking for. Will browse thru the site for more information.

@psycho / Ken - Great Advice! am definitely headed towards FF. in fact, the kit lens is the only EF-S lens I have. The 'recession' held me back from a 5d mkII (had the money ready, but it eventually ended up in a fixed deposit :D). I realized how much I needed the 14mm on last year's Leh ride - I felt the 24-105 on an APS-C body wasn't too wide. eventually, I plan to have a UWA (14mm), a general purpose lens (24-105), a telephoto zoom (70-200) and an high focal length (=> 400mm). The 400mm DO prime looks so tempting, but is very out of reach :P

@sarao - Thanks! very good point. I will check up at the store, but then I doubt if I could get it as cheap as s'pore (118k vs 91k).

Wildlife photography is definitely on my to-do, but then again free time is so much in short supply. Thanks everyone for their suggestion.
