Good one Zwaltek. Great stone and water texture. We would also like to know the kind of filters you have used for processing this one, to darken the sky or to lighten the haystacks. Thanks.
zwaltek
03-02-2009, 10:55 AM
well from what i remember it's not really a filter. Sometimes i use AlienSkin to tweak tonality and aspect but on this one i guess it's a simple BW conversion don in CS3.
As for the sky do a selection of it, precisly avoinding the trees.
save this selection, it creates a new alpha channel.
Then go in quick mask mode and create a mask using a ramp/gradient.
go back in normal mode you now have a selection using that ramp
Then call back the selection you have saved previously and in the "operations" change menu, select subtract from selection.
The resulting selecting should be a nice ramp minus the tip of the trees.
then you can play with the levels to give it more or less punch.
levels is something that could be use for a lot of different enhancement, in color and BW.

I love the treatment for the first one by Emile. Can you share the workflow with us?

It's somewhat the same principle.
Here there was behind the head of that lady a grape of helmets hanging. They were a bit annoying in the reading of the image. So i did a selection of the lady with her scarf. I saved this selection and turned it into a alpha channel (mask).
Then with quick mask i did a circular ramp starting from the hanging helmets.
Recall the lady selection and subtract it from the current selection. You can now darken the background without altering the lady.
The I dodged and burned a bit the lines made by the corrugated to give them a little power and make the similarity with her forehead lines a bit more obvious.
As a final i did increase a bit the contrast and brought down the luminosity on her face.

Wow!!! You dodge, burn, sidestep, alpha channel your selection! I need to meet you in person. To make sense of what you are saying here. I am sure someone like Vicky can perfectly understand what you are saying. To me it is like Swahili!

ah ! you are hard on me Krishendu, i try to be simple and clear :p Apparently it doesn't work :( :)
But i do agree, it's certainly not easy to catch when reading a sequence of words like that and much more understandable when you see it actually being done before your eyes. It'll be a pleasure to show you these common little steps whenever we meet around a computer.

I will definitely try out the explanations given by you once I have some free time to myself away from work, back home. If I am unable to execute what you elucidated here, I will get back to you if you do not mind, even fly down to Pune if it is not a problem.

Technically speaking not much to say, same method as above, isolate the subject from the BG and work them separately.

Brilliant again I must say. Both in composition and in treatment.
Was this shot in B/W or did you desaturate in PP? And if it was desaturated, which is the best way to do it?

@Zwaltek: Superb! Again, like in one of your earlier portrait which I remember, you have given it the same treatment which really works! In this case, the Bandana of the boy matches the texture of that staircase/ brick-wall behind him. I would like to know which lens did you use to shoot this? And ofcourse the EXIF information, if possible, please.
Loved it! :)

hello you three & thanks for your interest
here's some exif f/1.4 47mm M8 Digital Camera 1/20s 160iso
and that's all i have because the leica machine does not give more than that. manual focus, maximum aperture, low speed.
It's digital and i did use pshop and alienskin to get the BW. Desaturating is rarely enough to get a bw. CS3 and 4 are better but i prefer to work with alienskin.
cheers. ez

Systematic use of rule of thirds, good caption, brilliant PP (atleast on my monitor) wherein I am seeing almost a replica of B/W prints of yore. I wonder how you guys manage to get PP results on monochrome like this.

Lovely shot. How did you darken the sky?
in PS-CS3 when you change image in to black and white click & drag the area that you want to be darken or lighten, u can see the cursor changing in to a two sided arrow . move right and left dragging the cursor as you need
I do like that to darken or lighten the areas. dont know about others :p

Thanks Ken :)
Nowadays, I usually do my BW conversion in LR. Gives me more creative control.
Under the grayscale tab, you'll find sliders for different colours. All you got to do is drag the blue slider to the left and you get a dark sky in BW! (provided the sky is blue in the first place :p)

I walk alone, I walk alone....
Just a little bit under-exposed I think, the grain effect is just about right although it looks more like software simulated.
The placement of the person is good in the sense that he is not blocking the path and thus you can get the view ahead.
To get the grains in the camera itself try shooting at a higher ISO setting even in good light.

Hi Anirban,
This picture is so grainy that it lost all it's details. Why? There is so much light.
Henry
I wanted a bit of grain...and I overdid it in the software. Sorry about that.
I love your dunes shot! :)

A lovey monochrome of a beautifully crafted exhaust. Well if this piece is part of any automobile...then I appreciate the physics and mechanics behind it.
Even otherwise it a true piece of art..this time you standing and composing a vertical image.:)

Lovely Shot Ken!
This thing looks HUGE!! Which car does it belong to? I may be wrong though, as I'm unable to get a true idea of its proportions for lack of any other object in the frame that could give me a sense of scale!

It indeed is. Though now I am not sure if it is real! :)

Thanks Vicky.
I did not think about it. On the spot I was more bothered about composing the shot. And there were no details given. It was kept as a piece of work. Now that you asked the question, I am not sure if it is even a real exhaust. Phew!
To give you an idea, the outlets are almost 15cms in dia. It is quite big actually. The whole thing is bigger than me. :)

Damn! If at all these are real and part of some engine, then these must belong to some multimillion dollar luxury sports yacht!;)

BMW has indeed moved on to build tailor-made luxury yachts for some private companies!

Well, we have a Highway to hell (http://www.thephotographer.in/darkroom/showpost.php?p=2003&postcount=44) shot here!
Maybe this could be called as the 'Stairway to hell'? :p

All I had with me when I saw this was my phone. Sharpness is not so good in low light.

Good caption.
Not a bad shot either. Nothing exceptional. But this is part of the curve.

Thank you sir!
I think a human element in this photo would have added to it's beauty.
I actually find it very difficult to incorporate a human element into my shots of pathways and roads...I somehow am not satisfied..anyway I will try incorporating that in my next...
