Nokia has announced their latest smartphone from the N-Series family, the Nokia N86 with an 8mp sensor. Check this link

More than the 8mp resolution (which is available on SE and Samsung phones as well), its the wide angle (28mm) and the variable aperture (F2.4/F3.2/F4.8) that excites me. Of course, lack of optical zoom is still a drawback.
Do you people think that the gap between entry to mid level P&S cameras and mobile phones has finally been filled?

News Approved
With those optics on the phones, I doubt that they will close the gap with P&S whose lenses are bigger with better optics...

There was some news about the first phone cam with a physical shutter, that's one step in the right direction.
But it'll be long way before a P&S can be beat feature+quality wise by a phone cam.

AFAIK, The Samsung INNOV8 was the first camera phone to host a mechanical shutter.

Speaking of which, here's a good read on comparision between the Samsung INNOV8 (8mp cameraphone) and a Canon IXUS.

The results are pretty comparable (and in some cases the INNOV8 even outshines the Canon). I'm not a big fan of the current cameraphones, but it would be great if you can carry a small and decent camera with you all the time, and what better solution to that than a mobile phone? :D

I would not mind if I could make phone calls with a 450D!!! :D A trifle cumbersome though.

The phone obviously isn't really comparable - fixed focal length, I'm assuming the sensor size is smaller than 1/2.5" and no IS etc.
It is a kickass phone and phonecam no doubt, but the digicam is way better. Pretty impressive test shots though.

Yes. Pretty impressive sample shots no doubt. Although I am quite sceptical of such test shots, but here I will take it as it comes. Seems like it is one of the best cam-phones with delivering pretty good pictures. I hope the phone per se is good with a decent battery standby time.

I completely agree. There's a lot of room for improvement and I feel that this is definitely a step in the right direction for camera phones.

I had no idea about the Kiev. Just googled 'funny camera phone' and this is the one that popped out first.
24 years? :O That's a long time! The camera looks nice and sexy! Is it of Russian make?
Oh ok bigtime OT here.
Well not actually, coz we're still discussing 'camera phones' :p
