Let's showcase our Non DSLR Pics. They could be clicked by a P&S or even a cellphone camera.
I'll start this thread with one pic and everyone can join. :)
This is to prove that the guy behind the camera is more important than the camera itself.
Here's my entry

Those Macros are with your S3???!!! Amazing stuff Aryan. I did not know that the S3 could shoot like that.
2nd Question: is the eye a self-portrait?

2nd Question: is the eye a self-portrait?
:D Thanks! Yes, the S3 can do pretty amazing stuff, really. For that matter, any P&S/ digital camera can shoot some amazing macros. In most of the cases, people just don't try and hence think that macro is only capable through specialized equipment.
Yes, that eye shot is a self portrait! :D Ha Ha!

I liked the 2nd one the best. The 1st one looks too stark for my taste. I know it kinda typifies your style which I am seeing for the past year or so. Nice ambiance captured there.
You shot in Auto WB. However I feel that had you shifted your white balance to cloudy, there would have been less green bias.
shutterbug
07-28-2009, 09:03 AM
Ken da, yes it was shot in auto wb. But again the green bias is because I increased saturation and vividity of colors a bit.
Next time will also try with cloudy wb. I actually I had it on for a lot of shots, as these parts were always cloudy last coupla weeks. I must have gone back to auto wb sometime. he he!
Let's showcase our Non DSLR Pics. They could be clicked by a P&S or even a cellphone camera.

@Anvancy: How to do that???
Crop it in the 16:9 (or even wider) format. It will give the image a better feel. The photo is already good and the only qualm I have with it, is the composition in which the horizon is too centered.

the shot has huge potential in it.i cant work much on a small 500pixel shot.thats why you can see clippings in the sky..

I'm pretty comfy with GIMP actually, use it for work related stuff! But not much or rather never for photos.. :)
Question is, can we achieve in GIMP the same results as PS?
AFAIK, Powerslave uses GIMP and as you all know, his PP is top notch.
I may be wrong, but GIMP doesn't support 16 bit files. But I doubt if that'd be a limitation to 99% of people.

1st can be a child stage---curious in everything that you see.
2nd can be teen age----where you start to experience life..those katta days, those bunking class and watching movie..switching of girlfriend-boyfriend..
3rd is adulthood----experienced,matured..know what happens..have a family to look after.
4th is old age---
energy is less.your children well settled now, living as a pensioner??
5th and last stage is death---
at last the time comes for us to go and be a part of HIS WORLD.
cherish each and every moment of your life.

anvancy-(macro analyst)
02-13-2010, 12:01 PM
thanks all.
though some people are saying the reflection which is falling on the watch is kind of distracting.ill be working on the specular highlight issue on that.you have to control the amount of light which is falling on a very high reflective surface.
the idea for this shot is very very simple.
take a subject.which in my case was a watch.
against a wall (ie your temp studio)just attach plain white paper.stick it,bend and keep it your way.what we want is seamless paper.
so now you have white paper in the back, white paper which is down the subject.
gaining the reflection is a simple task.just go to a stationery store and ask for "transparency sheets".these sheets were used on OVH projectors until LCD ones came.these sheets act as glass.so your reflection is complete.
fire off camera flash at various angles and distances you like.in my case i fired the flash from a shoot through umbrella, one to camera left and one above bouncing the flash through the umbrella.
merged both shots together and you have this.
you have a zillion ways to actually showcase a shot.infact after reading strobist and trying out off camera flash, the off camera truly starts to showcase the depth of a shot.on camera provides flash on axis.off camera opens up the imaginable possibilities of off x y z axis.
for a moment put your saved lens money on a flash and see the magic.

Thanks PS.
my intention of this shot was to make things seamless white.
setup is very simple.
white paper in the background.
white paper underneath.transparency paper under the shuttle cock.
two homemade reflectors aluminum sheet ones kept to the left and right of the shuttle cock acting as fillers.
one VIVITAR 285HV at 1/4th power fired through umbrella.
0.77sec F10.
the umbrella was moved fast from left to right during the exposure.so the flash was triggered two times through the umbrella.
hope it helps.

That's a pretty thoughtful and interesting setup. I like the transparency idea for the reflection.
Do you have/mind sharing a SOOC shot? If not it's okay, I just want to see how that turned out SOOC.

I now have two beauties.the vivitar 283 and the 285HV.both are powerful enough.

Cool man, that's one way of looking at it, I would want to leave as little to the PP as possible, but I guess there's enough room to play with the exposure in these shots. I wonder what difference in quality would show up if the exposure's got SOOC versus underexposing + push in PP.
Viny: Nice shots, especially the first one, but the frame, text and the crop are killing it for me. The first one would really stand out.

I like how one can spice things up in PP relative to SOOC and then saying the shot is good.editing gives you the next tool to take the shot to the next level IF done right.
Under my conditions,i need editing to bring out the level of the shot at par with the major DSLR users on net.if you have a close look on this forum, look at the posts made in the DSLR photo duel and the views that keep increasing.the perception according to many is photography=DSLR.I have to bring my work atleast to the standard level to make it look appealing for me and others.
My limitation is my aperture.I can only stop down till F11.as you and I know, shutter speed controls the ambient light, aperture the intensity of the flash.my F11 starts to give edgy areas if not done correctly.so that makes me go till F10.F11 under emergencies.:p
next, the camera LCD shows you one thing since well its a LCD.you put that shot and see thru a CRT and you have different black and color levels.so keeping all this in mind, having room and PP is better rather than sticking to SOOC.my view.

I too agree to this completely. There is HDR, Stacking etc. etc. for the RAW files of DSLRs to give them even better outputs but in our case the limitations and the PP are all that we have ;)
@Avancy some great images there sharp and bright.
@Viny: Loved your photos too, its certainly smoking. 2nd one's color tone is too good. Can you share some more info on the setup and lighting?
@debangshu: I am not a pro, hence there was nothing pro like stuff to do the settings. All i did was create a black background (used my laptop bag :p as background), got a couple of Incense/Aggarbati made the room dark and made my table top tublelight glow up right on top of the incese smoke, brought my hand into the smoke and as the fumes/smoke accomodated and passed over, i took the clicks :) Simple as that. I was fiddling arround with my camera and there was no specific configs done, just few playing arround with focus, exposure and frame rate etc.

one point i will make to ur para is upper prosumers do offer RAW,and bracketing options.since prosumer sensor+processor are not fast enough JPG bracketing ie AEB is there but not RAW.(example my cam provides raw.the buffer speed is a snail 3.5seconds)
stacking is a wholly after processing item.
its like this.the prosumers cant have all the world in a bridge.if they start putting bigger sensor, better processor engine(ie more technically advanced considering prosumers)fast lens then the cost increases.when the cost increases people start saying that I will put in DSLR instead of this since I will get better results etc.(Fuji S100FS is the perfect example.)
so there is always a fight against versatility Vs quality.many take bridge cams for occasional vacation purposes or a second back up cam.here in our country its more of a status issue.seen it.felt it.
my only point regarding versatility is that you are getting a complete system through which u can "at least" make your way up.once you are up u can make this as a back up cam.
That said i m dying for some money so that i can buy my D.:p

A canon G11, Fuji S100fs and many more P&Ss costs more than entry level DSLRs. The ratio of status to segment (P&S and DSLR) seems to be going against your theory.
For me a status is directly proportional to the intelligence in image, to the hell with any tom, dick or harry equipment used in any tom, dick or harry mode, processed in any tom, dick or harry software.
OT- Not meant for argument- what I know is a Prosumer is a pro+consumer segment camera and a D300/50D etc. fits into this segment. Full framers are pro and D60/1000D/D5000 or s8500/f50/s100fd/cybershots/powershots etc. are consumers.

camera companies through marketing decide what is compact, compact plus, bridge and next to DSLR.so another way to look at it.
consumers are compacts.point and shoot.point and shoot and forget.
prosumers in non dslr are for those like me who want to start of but dont have the necessary funds.i know that i cant finance my lens payment so what do i do?buy a bridge.it is totally personal and changes from person to person.

Out of Curiosity, I want to know what makes this shot awesome for you? I am new to photography so probably dont have the eye to look at the way pros or experts might look at the given shot. Could you help me in understanding what makes the above shot "Awesome" or "Great Shot"? As a newbie to me its more like under exposed shot or a shot with a some desi filter.
