Over this period, I’ve clicked more than 40k photos
The shutter life of the 400D (& the 1000/450D) is 50k, right?
What happens after this?
Can we get it replaced or do we have to dump the camera?

It can be replaced for a minor price.
Also 50k is a average count. Many people have used them well beyond that number.

Don't worry, 50k isn't that small a number. I'm at 10k+ after a year of low-moderate usage,so unless you shoot a 1000 photos a day, you don't have to worry about the shutter for atleast a few years. And the replacement is like $130-150. ( I think, not sure). But by then you'll probably want to upgrade anyway. :D

I follow a similar pattern. I think I clicked a 1000 snaps within the first 3 days (or 5, don't remember) of obtaining my cam. Then slowed down for a bit, and have clicked easily over 4000 in the past month alone. It comes and goes.
I'm shooting a lot more now. Tomorrow I'll be shooting a baseball game and I should shoot anywhere from 1000-1500 photos then. The good thing is use multiple bodies. Tomorrow I'll be using a D100, along with my XTi.
The thing is it comes and goes. Not a very uniform pattern.

+1 on both counts.
A friend of mine still owns a 350D with over 100k shutter count and still going strong:)
I picked up my 400D on 5th May 2007 and I'm currently at around 18.9k... works up to around 900 clicks a month.... or 30 each day:eek::p

Thanks Ken! This will definitely help a lot of new members who share the same fear that I used to.

I personally really do not think that shutter life should not create too many problems for the first 3 years or so. After that I guess it becomes important to upgrade for any serious photographer, be it a pro or an amateur. I have heard of most pro-sumer DSLR cams easily lasting 100,000 shutter cycles.
