I guess the following conversation has happened with most of us amateur photographers.
Just a small satirical Q&A session :P

Mr X : Canon kyun khareeda? Nikon is better na?
Me : A matter of personal choice actually.

Mr X : For how much did you buy your camera?
Me : 32k with the kit lens

Mr X : Kitna 'X' zoom hai?
Me : DSLR lenses(focal length) aren't actually measured in that way.
But to give you a brief idea, it's around 3x in normal P&S terms.

Mr X : Only 3x?! :O
Me : *shrugs*

Mr X : Kitna megapixel hai?
Me : 10

Mr X : 10 mp? I bought a 12mp Sony digicam few days back for only 15k.
Me : Yeah? Nice! :)

Mr X : Does it have Video recording?
Me : No, Most DSLRs don't have that facility

Mr X : Damn! Even my cellphone shoots DVD quality videos! Dude you have made a bad purchase!
Me : I know :( You should have advised me earlier.

Mr X walks away...

p.s : Sorry if I've hurt any Sony fans, it's just that I hate their P&S cameras (I own one too :p)

:) Maybe because I generally avoid equiment discussions with Mr X that I may meet on the road unless the person interests me. And when I am out on the streets shooting, I try to remain focussed with the subject in mind. Hence the chance of such a conversation happening has remained slim I guess.

Mr X in my case is always a family friend who comes visiting and gets to know that I've bought an 'expensive' camera. :|

lucky that I do not have an SLR yet, else this kinda thing would be a daily event around me....

This is something that happens to me even by DSLR users. And I do have a tough time explaining them that I use a prime. And they are totally baffled, why not a zoom!!!

This happened sometime in 2007...

I was at the zoo with a friend to try out my then newly acquired 400D with 70-300IS, and my friend had his XT with 70-300 sigma. Since, we were the only guys around with DSLR's amongst a crowd of P&S, cellphone cams, etc, we were pretty much the center of attention wherever we went..

Then near the tiger's enclosure, i was framing a shot over the heads of a few kids standing at the railings... when suddenly I hear a lady politely requesting me to stop for a moment ..... I bring down the cam, and notice she pulls out a comb from her purse and starts to make the hair of her two kids.. then positions them back where they were standing, but this time facing me instead of the enclosure... then smiles at me and says "now you can shoot"... all this when the kids were not even in the frame of my pic! Anyway, being a nice guy, i clicked a few of them... but had to zoom down to 70mm and still back off a little to get them:) Then the lady's husband approaches me and asks which 'paper' we are shooting for? His eyes suddenly sparkled up when he noticed the National Geographic bag on my friend's shoulder, he yells to his wife, they're from National Geographic!!

We just walked away with this huge grin on our faces:D

Another classic one:

I was at our terrace on night and taking pics of the moon... a neighbor came up and wanted to see the shots I got... after seeing the shots he was like... "these are not bad, but you'll get much better results if you open up your flash!":D:D:D

Just check if that guy is from ISRO? or NASA for that matter :D ..

I was taking some water fall shots in satodi (the hdr I shared) .. A group of men also taking shots with their handsets came to me and asked, "can u please take our group photo and transfer it via bluetooth??" ..

They gave an inferior look at me when I said this instrument (a D40) does not have a bluetooth :D ..

Sometimes people dont believe that mine is a digital cam as I can't compose the image on LCD (Live View).
