I think this is one thread that's missing from this section. Here is my first entry.

As I was returning back from Pangong Tso lake towards Leh, yet another eye catching landscape caught my attention and I couldn't stop myself from capturing it in my camera.

Wonderful! If you have more pictures, then kindly post. :) Although, I've never been to Ladakh, but come May I just might visit another equally beautiful place. ;) Fingers crossed. :)

Great shot there mate and taken with the humble kit lens! This proves that the photographer matters more than the equipment:)

Why 28mm? Would have loved to see an ever wider view!

Thanks Ken.

@Aryan: Thanks. Some more, all these are from my 2007 visit. From 2008 visit, I'll post later :). Sorry, the progress will be a bit slow. Though I have got some 400+ shots, I was using a SLR for the first time in my life (bought it less than a week before the trip), hence not many shots have come good right out of the box.

There were scenic landscapes all around as I descent down Zoji La and headed towards Kargil.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3299/3290273523_be93724468_m.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/navendus/3290273523/)
400D, EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (kit lense), f/13, 18mm, 1/125sec, ISO 400 (This was a mistake, that I didn't realise until next morning, all shorts on this day were clicked with this ISO setting).

A view of Gata Loops, captured just after I started my descent.

400D, EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (kit lense), f/11, 18mm, 1/125sec, ISO 100

A view of Suraj Tal (Lake of Sun God) from Bara-lacha-la pass.

400D, EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (kit lense), f/6.8, 18mm, 1/100sec, ISO 100

@Vicky: Thanks. I guess Ladakh is one place where if you point and click, most of times you can get a good shot ;). Wider than this & I was having a lot of uninteresting mountain portion getting added to the frame, hence I narrowed down to this frame.

Nope. I'm a fan of SOOC pics.

Because i'm lazy. I believe the camera should do most of the work, and that I shouldn't have to do any work after i've paid 50-60k for the basic kit. Or atleast it should do 90% :)

What about the film photographers who did a lot of PP in the darkroom? And what about current professional sports/nature/wildlife photographers who do the same on Photoshop/Lightroom?

Forget about all of this, what about shooting in RAW?

Tao, a good understanding of both Photography & Post Processing are equally essential to get the best results out of your camera... like people learn the basics of photography (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, rule of 2/3rds, etc) over time and get better at it, similarly they need to learn the basics of post processing (levels, curves, cropping, noise removal, etc) and will gradually get better at this too...

Like with food, a great chef is one who not only prepare heavenly dishes, but also presents them in the most exotic and mouth watering way:)

For me, photography is a total of your ability to first create and then present your creation in the most appealing way:)

With most of those guys that still think that 'PP is taboo', its usually a case of ignorance is bliss:(

Just be glad you didn't have the craving to be a photographer in the film era, coz most of the magic happened in the darkroom.

A camera is an objective instrument. Photography however, is subjective. What you see out of the camera might not be how you envisioned the scene (it almost never was, in the film days); and you have every right to tweak it to subjective perfection if you so desire.

There's nothing wrong with shooting a boosted JPEG on your camera if that makes you happy. But as I once said before, anyone who thinks of digital post processing as a taboo is fairly naive about the history of photography.

Also, you're missing out on a ton of fun in the darkroom. or lightroom, in this case. :D

hitanshu

Yaar,

Its simple. I'm saying that its like a bloody coffee maker for all I care. I can always tweak the coffee for MY kinda taste, but I want a lovely enough taste out of the box.

Of course it can NEVER replace filter coffee by the yard (Madurai anyone?) at 3am, but if it does a pretty decent job, that's it :)

PS: I don't have time for the fun or as I see it, the effort.
PPS: I am actually beginning to completely tire of this charade honestly. I have a totally specific question. Whether RAW has possibilities or what I'm missing out is completely irrelevant to me - all I asked was that what camera system (Nikon/Canon) gives more sharper/saturated pics out of the box in JPEG.

If the answer is, both are equal (courtesy X Y Z settings, or even at factory defaults) - let me know - but seriously, I'm personally tiring of the whole RAW perspective. Is anyone listening to what I'm asking specifically?

all I asked was that what camera system (Nikon/Canon) gives more sharper/saturated pics out of the box in JPEG.

Go to DPReview and check the reviews of your favorite body. skip to the part where they compare JPEG output with competing bodies. There you shall find your answer.

On another sidenote, stop looking at cameras as appliances devoid of passion; i.e. coffee makers et al. If anything, THIS is the reason why you're worried that photography would become a chore. ;)

hitanshu
08-19-2009, 10:22 PM
Yaar dekh.

a. I might sound like a nutcase, but I've compared the sample image galleries of 40D, 500D, 450D, D5000, D90 already :D
b. You got my mental frame bang on. And you again tend to oversimplify. I'm not saying photography will be a chore - its the post processing that I won't have enough time for. Its not like its rocket science or that I'd hate doing it, but that I want simply sharper pics out of the box.
c. Talking of DPreview. They are essentially going in circles:
"The older model offers superb pixel level sharpness and despite its increased resolution the 500D struggles to squeeze much more detail out of the JPEG files. The color response is unsurprisingly almost identical." i.e don't buy 500D if you'll shoot JPEG

"As we saw with the comparison to the D80 (itself not the sharpest camera in the cupboard), the D90's default output is very soft, having had very low levels of sharpening applied. Canon, meanwhile, takes the opposite approach, delivering very crisp (and contrasty) images at its default setting. Other than that, there's little to choose between the two.
--> tells me to dump D90 and move on to 450D (not 500D since it gives same output!)

"There certainly isn't any appreciable improvement in resolution, despite the sensor finding space for another two million photosites. The D90 does a better job of rolling off the highlights on the paperclips but other than slightly lower contrast overall, there's not a huge difference between the two cameras at base ISO." D90 vs D80 = not much difference

"If the sharpening differences between the Nikon and the Canon seemed dramatic, then you might want to sit down before comparing the Nikon's output to the Olympus E-620. Much like the D60, Olympus has gone for a fairly aggressively sharpened, bright color response that will make it easy to get punchy prints from. The Nikon defaults are a much more muted, naturalistic affair. Both can of course be tweaked to resemble the other." meaning buy any bloody body.

So essentially go around in circles!

synn
08-19-2009, 10:48 PM
Tau, you're overthinking things. Why not beg, borrow or steal each of these bodies, set sharpening/ saturation etc. to your liking and take a test shot? Use your own memory card, bring it home and see on the computer. THEN make your decision.

There's a lot one can do to a camera's JPEG output via tweaking the settings. It'll be a futile effort to explain this online. You gotta try it out yourself and trust your own eyes.

Reason why I don't do much PP is that:
1. I don't get much time.
2. I am not good at most of it.
So, basic WB & Exposure adjustment etc is what I manage to do in the limited time I got. :)

Superb pic! :)

But just one correction, the village seen in the pic that I posted last is actually the Khardung Village. The village seen in the pic posted by you is the Tsati village. :)

Khardung village is just about 12 kms (could be wrong with figure!) from North Pullu outpost.

@ALL: C&C for the previous few pics please :)

@Arijit: Thanks a lot, I've moved over to PS for PP rather using Canon DPP for my pics of Pangong and onwards days, yes I do take a lot more time than I used to with DPP, but in the end I feel its worth it.

At present just playing with the options the PS gives for editting RAW pics, have to learn what else is possible.:o

And the last pic u posted is an excellent shot there, its a bit too soft/dreamy for my taste. But that's just my taste :)

As you have asked for c&c...Its a perfectly exposed picture....Landscape pic. in Portrait composition ????? ...well it seems out of place...for me...

There are no leading lines or verticals to aid the Portrait composition...

this pic. would have been striking if it was in landscape compo..

Pls. dont mistake me...its my 2 cents....!!!:)

Thank you so much for your comments! This is exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for :)

The reason why I took it like this is because I wanted to get the Moon in the shot and also the bank of the lake. I think I could have cropped this as a square to balance the image better? Right?

Here's one more from the same location....

Simply Brilliant...!!! Its a credit to the landscape mode of composition....

A 16ft* 20ft Enlargement would virtually put you there everyday....

I still feel the Dissecting line between the mountain and the lake should occupy the lower half of the center of the frame.

I should make it to this place once in my lifetime....to appreciate the serenity of the place.

And also thank you the tip about composition, will try and keep it in mind next time around.

If you haven't been there yet, start planning right away...You will not regret it one bit! :)
