The title of this thread makes things pretty clear, isn't it? :D So, what's the wait? Let's start posting some of the shots which you have clicked that have terrific bokeh!

To start with, here is what fifteen minutes of idle time, a camera (400D) and a 50mm f1.8 is capable of. Look at that DoF; simply STUNNING! I love the f1.8 nifty-fifty.. ;) I am sorry that these pictures have no real aesthetic
value. I just wanted to show the prowess of this lens wide open at f1.8. All the shots have been clicked under quite low light, handheld. This lens is terrific for low light photography (as if you didn't know it already!).. :p

EXIF:
Camera: Canon EOS 400D
Lens: Canon 50mm f1.8 II
Aperture: f1.8

The lens is great. And pretty decent handheld job. I would have liked it better though had you cleaned the keyboard before shooting it.

I call it mutual appreciation since the nifty fifty was taken by Tamron and viceversa

Absolutely no PP in all the above shots ...

Clicked these photos using tripod ,Liveview and remote.

Since it was dark and my eyes started paining (with continious MF through VF) I used Live view for the first time .The Live view featutre proved to be really great specially when you can 5x and 10X your subject and check your focus .I think its really a boost for people doing extensive macro , lowlight or focus nerds more so with the 5X feature (10X becomes too much in some cases but still handy).

a 50mm can only do so much. Fast lenses of longer focal lengths would be the key to total oblivion of the background. (am dreaming about the AF Nikkor 135/2 DC)

Yes, I think so too, although it was way too small. I almost crushed it. The 100mm lens was having trouble focusing on this. :D Manual focus was even more troublesome! :p

Thanks, Nelson. I really love that 50mm F1.4 D. Hope to own a G version sometime. It has a 9 blade diaphragm so it kinda loses the characteristic bokeh of this one, but the faster AF makes it an even trade.

I envy Nikoners for the sheer reason that you can use the age old lenses which are considered better for pretty cheap prices .

BTW did you try the sigma 50/1.4 anytime ? people say its better than the Canon one and is even costlier for the same reason.

synn
05-09-2009, 01:52 AM
Sorry Nelson, never used a Sigma 1.4 (But the reviews say it is pretty good). I have access to a Sigma 50mm 2.8 macro though. In terms of sharpness, I'd rate the three 50mm lenses i have used as follows:

1) Zeiss 50mm 1.4
2)Nikkor 50mm 1.4
3)Sigma 50mm 2.8

Stopped down to F4, the first two are in a league of their own. Of course, you lose AF with the Zeiss, but for shooting still life, I haven't yet used a sharper 50 mm.

You do not need any professional tool to calibrate your monitor. I suppose you do not have a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor. If you have a TFT flat screen, you just have to go to Adobe Gamma on the control panel of your comp and follow the instructions to calibrate your monitor. (In darkness)

Also. the FG subject(is that one of those flowers in focus?) is kind of lost. Is it because of processing or was it like this in original? Yup i saw it in full on a 24inch.

Your pics were more of faux-eh than bokeh. ;)

When you use photoshop to create defocusing, use lens blur instead of gaussian blur. The effect is a lot more convincing.

Hilarious! Your comments made my day.

Ok here is some feedback from my side.

Bokeh is there but too much of Halo effect is added while post processing it.Also both the images could have been cropped and in both the images it seems that the flower is sticking out of the image. Can you post the original image so that we can compare it with the post processed one to give a better feedback? One more question - Is the bokeh created by the mobile camera only or it is a PP craetion?

shutterbug
08-18-2009, 04:30 PM
amvj, dont be disheartened brother! I guess everyone must have missed those thumbnails posted. Have you created the bokeh using photoshop? there s too much blurring, and the subject is not really in sharp focus. In the first one I think you should look at maybe cropping the right side a bit and doing the bokeh pp again?
Hope you dont mind my amateur comments.

Frankly speaking, I don't really consider completely out-of-focus pictures as examples of bokeh. Is it technically bokeh? Yes. But the right way to use bokeh is to make your subject stand out and in these pictures, there is none.

That shot would have looked a lot more interesting if you had focused on the railing, Nelson.

The pattern of the bokeh depends on the number of blades in your diaphragm. The more the number of blades, the rounder the pattern.

^^^ Point taken @Synn. Actually my intention was to make the pentagons (octagons are very hard to get from 50 f/1.8 ) . I think I need the 50 f/.95 L now :)

Odd number of blades give you 2x sided polygon in the bokeh. Even number of blades give you 2x sides too, but they're overlapping, and so you get an x sided polygon.

synn

DxO has two different cross processing algorithms based on two film types. Add a color filter to it and once can see some very interesting results!

If I'm not mistaken, the curves dialog in photoshop CS3 offers a cross-processing preset too, though not as convincing.

More than anything else I was tryin to get that bokeh effect...Aperture was wide open at the max possible. Is there any other way that I could have made the bokeh stronger? Or the is that a hardware limitation....

Yes its the FL which makes the bokeh stronger. If you take a wide angled shot your get a stronger DOF (Depth of field) means more depth of background will be covered. If you zoom more i.e. tele and take shot a bigger aperture then you'll get better bokeh.

The maximum focal length (35mm equiv.) of that camera is 105mm, which is pretty good to have some kind of background blur. Other than that, yes, it is a hardware limitation.

The shot is really good except that at both the sides, people got cut off which gives the shot a slightly incomplete and uncomfortable feel... If you have enough time while taking a photograph, play with the camera placement or zoom level to achieve that perfect composition.

To achieve a shallow DOF, wherever possible, always use full zoom, move as close as you can to the subject and try to choose the farthest possible background with the aperture wide open... With this, you will max out your camera's 'bokeh-producing' capability. :)

Since there are not much options on a P&S, the easiest way to get bokeh is turning on the macro mode. Like in the above pic, turn on the macro mode, keep the camera couple of feet away from the bottle then zoom in till the bottle comes near. Then when you focus on the bottle you will get the bokeh effect on the back ground. The more the zoom more the bokeh effect on the back ground. Of course there comes a point where with more zoom the foreground object does not get focused. Then zoom out a bit or go a bit nearer to the object:)

A pic from the above method. Yet to get the flashed fixed on the cam
