Titus, Thanks very much for ur comment...I was following this guys acrobatics for some time....At one moment...he ran in...and there was no body else in the frame...I just timed it to get the action.....Just pan and shoot...

Shooting BIF....(birds in flight)...come in handy....:)

Mind you...shooting at the beach early morning is difficult...one is crowd...and another is the direct light which hits you thro the viewfinder....its blinding and tiring on the eyes.....

SOME CHALLENGE....!!!! :)

Thanks Kris,...It was an early morning event at the Puri Beach...

I had a strong suspicion that it was Puri. That is the only place where there are such strong breakers and people on the beach. But VERY dirty and OVERCROWDED! Do not like going there anymore.

Yes I do agree that shooting at Puri in the morning would be quite a task seeing that you are facing the rising sun!

The sensor, most probably. Try shooting a bright sky at narrow apertures (f/11 - f/16) You should find them magnified. Anyway, can you post the EXIF of the last photograph?

Bibudesh
09-08-2009, 01:24 PM
@shutterbug- I am finding something wrong with all of the shots u have shared which were taken using D200. I dont know but somehow the performance is not appealing. maybe some wrong setting in cam or maybe some incorrect PP.
All the pics are loosing sharpness, contrast, colour etc.

I would recommend you to thoroughly read the manual and check the colorspace settings etc. in your camera.

And try using Nikkor lenses most of the times.

Exif:
f11, 1/500s, iso100, focal length 78mm, wb auto.

Bibudesh,
I think the culprit is the photographer himself and his rather limited understanding of the camera. It may also have to do with the pp and resizing I do.

synn
09-08-2009, 02:07 PM
SP and Titus: I'm pretty sure the AF got fooled in the low light in that shot, hence the lost sharpness. Also, the matrix meter, as good as it is, can still get fooled in such high contrast situations. A bit of correction is often needed.

Deltaone
09-08-2009, 02:16 PM
Oh and do remember, the d200 has a far more complex and intricate AF system than the normal d80/90 type ones. You may need to fine tune it and go through the settings to get it right :D.

f/11, hmmm. That's the reason the spots look so prominent. It won't be so if you shoot at f/5.6 and lower I guess. Anyway, try using the 50/1.8 at narrow apertures and if you see the same spots, it's definitely sensor dust.

Bibudesh

I think the Sigma APO is the real culprit for the softness.

Take this- Not all Sigma lenses goes well with Nikon (and canons also) irrespective of their specs and aperture sizes. There are few EX lenses like 105mm macro which goes well with Nikon but still softer than Tamron and even more softer than Nikkor.
Unfortunately the 70-300mm APO is not one among the popular ones for Nikon.

Keep that lens in your trunk for some time and shoot only 50mm for the time being and see. Try to share some SOOC as well.

After you get well verged with the D200 then take out your APO.

That's a super shot!

Amidst all this recent debate about P&S v/s DSLR v/s Medium Format as the best camera, all I want to stress is that the only real camera is the Human Mind! Because, first of all, you need to be able to see 'the photo' with your mind and only then can you capture it with your camera!

Praveen saw this photo opportunity and captured this with his cellphone, while another guy may have ridden down the same road with a Mamiya in this bag and never taken a single shot!;)

I'd say that's taking the debate in the wrong sense. The debate is about differing levels of equipment while the talent remains the same. Forgetting that last part changes things a lot.

That's a very nice shot, nonetheless.

Welcome Xavier....we are having some fun....Tnx vicky, nice pic, and tnx guys for the appreciation...

xavier nice pic....but a word of caution...!! Direct exposure to mid-day sun, Ur potentially harming ur eye-sight and also the equipment....

Its extremely Dangerous to point and view the sun at such high latitudes....
even for a very short period of time...

U can replace ur equipment but not the retina of ur eye.....!

Masking or filtering in front of the lens is advised....Setting or Rising Sun is ok...b'cos of the low intensity of light....but still caution is adivised.

Thanks for the appreciation, Surya. Yes, I do know that it isn't advisable to look directly in to the sun through the viewfinder and this was the one and only time when I did it. I did get blinded for around 2 min though :p Actually I was tracking the bird and before I knew, it was in front of the friggin' sun!

Thenku! :D
Yes, Mr DxO, I do know that! :p

Anyway, the story is :
I was shooting the sunrise and hence had a high shutter speed, suddenly I see this hawk flying overhead. I instinctively tried to shoot it, only to later see that all I got was a black screen :( This is where the power of RAW came in and I managed to salvage the shot to this extent.

thanks for watching.

Awesome capture! :)

Just one question though, technically speaking this wont exactly be a Silhouette right? As the features of people is still visible?

Here's one more from my end....

@ Arijit, Thanks a lot for your appreciation....

@ Prafulthipathy, Thank you very much for the appreciation.

Well, My understanding of a silhouette is defnined profile of a object under the influence of a strong Back lighting....!!!

In my pic. there might be secondary reflections from water which may hi-light the subject....I still feel It qualifies for a Silhouette given otherwise...

Experts on this forum please correct me if I am wrong....

Prafulthripathy....very nice pic....But, both your previous pic. are frame centric composition..try and give some space by placing the subject to 3/4 quadrant of the frame....My 2cents...:)

no andi ... surya/praful's pics above are what are the ideal ones - yours are unintended silhouettes due to lack of flash :D

To me - What is key is semi-darkness, and a brilliantly lit sky!
