Artistic overbuy Sorrily Approved.

There's fine art and then there's pompous jackasses who get away with things like those just because they can.

Reading Ken Rockwell's newsbit on that was even funnier though. Dude contradicted himself half a million times in there.

So kids, have learned the importance of building your brand? Making the buyer believe that he's not buying a picture, but making an investment in art, that will keep going up in value over the years.

I don't know about photography, but I would love to take some marketing lectures from this Photographer.

Robin: I agree with you. It is a style of photography no doubt. And photography is reflection of you, which means wild variance in tastes.

I can see to some degree what someone would like in it, but I just can't get over the price tag!

I do like simplistic photos like these.

Now, a great classic philosophical question: If I told you a photo was sold for $x million, would you appreciate it more? If so, why?

Every photograph would be appreciated, if it attracts my eye at the first glance. I'm not looking at rules of photography when I see the image, but it should connect with me visually to have its impact.

But, yes the figures will be more appreciated by me, for even though I'm not a materialistic person, I wouldn't mind some few monies to get my desired lenses & a better body! :) Rest, I don't care for the other part of the amount.

Yes, I'm on a lookout for such big, hot shot buyers who will purchase my images for an inflated amount!

Well I was asking the question more along the lines of irregardless (sic) of what you charge, just given any photo, would your thought process / appreciation of the photo change if you were later told that the photo was sold for $x million.

It'd be more like my usual outings at Zara.

"Hey, that's a decent shirt... WHAT? 200 friggin' bucks for polyester? Fudge off!"

Time out... I need a break. I couldn't see through that video extolling the Rhine and its symbolism more than anything else!

Wow! The narrator is the best sales guy ever! Anyone who wants to make money can click the picture of a white wall and then hire him :D
PS: The picture is nice and serene. But for that price? Not so sure.

Great work, bud! But, for $5, I would like to see the tree & other shadows on too... This ain't compelling enough for me to buy it! :p

FYI, it is an overcast sky. Hence the light is diffused. Forget shadows.

Frankly, I couldn't care less how much money he makes. It's the fact that several great photographers are overlooked as the "Experts" make sweeping statements such as "Gursky is the greatest photographer currently alive", that gets me.

It's not a case of sour grapes, it's just someone having the balls to say that the emperor has no fudging clothes.

I know. I agree.

(But sour grapes nonetheless!) :)

No offence to anyone, but now I too have the right to ask for $5million for this 'piece of art', 'amazing photograph' and add-whatever-other-blurb you want here!

Sorry.

Cons:

- Unacceptable PF
- Unacceptable artifacts
- Not enough detail
- Too busy for something that lacks a well defined subject (might work in some cases, but not in this one.)

This seems either a VGA camera, or some very impressive post-processing skills! ;)

Totally agree with you there Power! It just occurred to me that I had a vaguely similar photo in my archives. And back in 2009 I knew nothing of photography!

That is my trusty old Nokia 6233's camera at work! Auto-correct is the only PP I did.

I still can't digest that a photo can sell for so much. IMHO, far better photos come as Windows desktop wallpapers. Do they get sold for so exorbitant rates at auctions?

synn

Actually, "Bliss", which most of you know as the "Windows XP wallpaper" is the most expensive image in the world. Microsoft has paid the photographer an undisclosed sum that he says "Is more than enough for me to retire on and is more than what any photographer has received for a picture".

It was taken on a medium format, with very little post processing too. By a REAL photographer.

Nice to know the history behind the photo. I guess that there are takers for a good photo.

Mr Andreas Gursky, I think even you hadn't imagined that your Rhine 2 would stir up such a big hornet's nest!
