Hi,

I would like to see better examples of photos taken with D-SLR cameras and their wide array of lenses (including third party lenses).

It does not matter when the photo was taken, as long as you only post ONE IMAGE PER DAY. You can add a picture everyday as long as it is different and has not already been posted on this forum.

It would be great if you can post your EXIF data, so that other photographers can learn from it. A small caption would be great too. Here is an example of a format that is welcomed below:

Great idea, Vicky! Though the only lens I have is the kit lens that came with my 1000D :(

A small suggestion : Why don't we have this duel for DSLRs as well as Point & Shoots so that nobody misses out on showcasing their pics? :)

Here's my first entry :

Great shots guys!

Sandeep, which palace is this and where? Looks like its made of wooden architecture.

Here's my entry for today:

This is my sister's family.. shot this photo from a fast moving overhead train in a theme park. I, along with my wife and son were seated in the boggy in front of them. I set the camera to continuous shooting, 1/200 in AV mode, flipped open the flash for some fill (as I would be shooting against the sky) and fired 5-6 shots from over my head with the camera upside down:eek: without even looking what I was shooting:cool: This one came out the best... Love the gay abandon and sheer happiness on their faces:)

Family

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l96/rx100/5x7b.jpg

Processed this as B/W as I didn't want the bright colors in the background to distract the viewers from their rich facial expressions. Added some noise and vignette to give it the old film look:)

Nice pic caught in the spur of the moment, Vicky! :)

Here's my entry for today.
It's one of my first portrait shots. Of my friend, Shanky.
I had specifically asked him to not look at the camera but wasn't satisfied at the first few shots. Clicked this shot when he wasn't expecting it and I liked the expression on his face :p
Did a bit of PP in CS2 since I had shot the original one in colour.

Here's my entry for the day

My German Shepherd, Queenie. This pic was clicked 2 weeks ago during the Christmas weekend. She was 4 weeks pregnant then. Just thought of adding the 2 toy doggies to 'set' up the mood for her oncoming maternity. :)
Changed the colour to Sepia using the colour tones function in PS to give it a different feel.

After having reduced the image size to 1024, I have very mildly tweaked the curve to an inverted 'S'. Hardly any difference from Off camera.

Very nice shot there Ken! Loving the contour of the dune, the sharp silhouettes and the great colors:) However, the composition is too 'centered' for my taste...

I would compose / crop to reduce the dark portion and 'de-center' the subject... maybe something like this..

Thanks.

Actually I personally do not much like the use of zooms. But that is personal and based on old school thinking when zooms were not considered top notch. Hence after a few years of zoom, I settled primarily for fixed focal lenses. Hence all my lenses are Primes. Yes, this is the classic 200 f2.8 L prime. Simply adore this lens.

Thanks for replying. Thats a wonderful lens you have and I do agree that excepting few costly L zooms primes are always better in I.Q. Is you lens the mk I or II type ? And did you test your lens with 1.4x EF or 2X EF...

No. I have not checked with the teleconverters though I have full access to them. Somehow I have never much intended checking it. But if you there is a common demand, I can put up images doing that.

Secondly and most importantly, the MkI or MkII of the 200mm f2.8 are Exactly the same lenses in composition, the number of elements, the number of groups; basically they are identical lenses down to the optical design. The only difference being, MkI is with a built-in hood and the MkII (1996) comes with a snap-on hood! Check here:
http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/170-canon-ef-200mm-f28-l-usm-ii-test-report--review
I bought these lenses 11 years ago and I had held both in my hand and I decided to buy the MkI same price for both then, and I found MkII more cumbersome since I had to carry the hood separately!

Yup, in actual size (or for that matter even in the uploaded large size 1024x768) a slight shake can be seen right at the top of its peek. It was a bit dark even after clicking at ISO200 didn't help.:(

Great photo ... But just a suggestion if I knew PP I would have done these:

1.Remove the tree from the left side covering the small domes.
2.Remove the glare on the right side - probably a light.
3.Straighten the horizon .
4.Decrease the reddish foreground .

Nice one there Nelson. So it seems you are using a lot of your tripod these days. But what is this thing that you have photographed?

Aryan
01-19-2009, 08:38 AM
@Nelson: Is that a macro? I have a hunch it is. Inspite of using an aperture of f11, the shallow depth of field suggests so.. :D And that 100mm focal length is a give-away as well! :p

Which lens? Canon? Sigm? And yes, what is that?

Nice one there Nelson. So it seems you are using a lot of your tripod these days. But what is this thing that you have photographed?

Even I dont know :) this thing just hit my head when I was passing under a tree - so I took revenge by photographing it .
And no @Kenda I am not using my tripod - infact the one that I have is a very cheap $20 Samsonite . I used manual focus and remote to shoot this.

Next month by this time I should be having a Bogen Manfrotto 055PROXB with a decent head .

@Nelson: Is that a macro? I have a hunch it is. Inspite of using an aperture of f11, the shallow depth of field suggests so.. :D And that 100mm focal length is a give-away as well! :p

Yes @Aryan you guessed it correct - it is a macro but nt 1:1 but 1:2 .And the lens is Canon 100mm 2.8 macro ...

Now I need to researc what is it ;)

Its easy to align a landscape in PP. use a ruler tool and draw a perfect horizontal line over the image (based on your aligning requirment).
Then go to adjust>rotate> arbitrary . PP will automatically select certain angle to rotate the image based on the ruler.
rotate the image and crop it to remove the white buffer corners.

Damn! That could have possibly been a very good shot!!

Too many issues here...

- mother is out of focus:(
- you cropped out the mother's ear!
- dull background - a little greenery and foliage would have been nice;)
- facial complexion is too dark.... should have chosen fairer monkeys:D
- no expressions on the child's face...maybe if he were suckling or something... it would add another dimension to the photo:p

But, don't loose heart just yet... maybe with my post processing genius, I could turn this one into a keeper:p:D

Ok, here you go...this is what I did..

- first of all made their faces fairer with 'glamor tool'
- regained focus on mom's face with 'focus finder'
- regenerated mothers ears.. fairly easy with 'clone tool'
- added some greenery and foliage and upped saturation a tad
- finally made baby suckle on mom to add that touch of emotion. Sorry, cannot disclose this one -secret tool used:)
- finally, fixed WB, slight levels & curves, and a little USM!

So, what do u say?:p

The above image was manipulated with the help of this photo that I shot with my Panasonic FZ5 on way to a temple located on top of a thickly forested hillock.

I say that you are indeed a post processing genius!!! If there is any photo-duel, it is right here.

You can make a green lizard grow horns fighting an Octopus horseback in the middle of Eden Gardens and make it look perfectly normal and EASY to achieve.

Checked out the exif.. 18-55 @ 55mm, 1/40, f/5.6, ISO 200... Even if you were at the closest focus distance of that lens, the dof is just unbelievably shallow:confused::confused:... do you have an extension tube or close up filter or something else on there?

But realistically speaking, nothing really detailed or professional here... just some crude 'copy/paste/flip/rotate/resize/duplicate/clone' work in CS3. Only worthy of a good laugh:)

I was at the park and noticed the low setting sun and numerous birds flying across it to and from the nearby trees. There I realized a potentiality of a shot like this and just stood there waiting and clicking for like 20mins with the 70-300 zoomed all the way to 300mm in hand(no tripod).... frame already composed... manual focused... continuous shooting mode... one eye in the viewfinder.. the other open and looking to spot the birds in advance as they flew across the sky and entered the frame... took a total of 60+ shots...

This one came out the best:)

I just opened the RAW file, turned it into Black & White in CS-3, resized it, and saved it. That's all I did, apart from playing with the brightness a little..

No sharpening done, it is directly off the camera. The 100mm lens is really good. :)

Yes, Old Delhi is a good place to get loads of such shots. There is loads of 'action' going on in the streets of Old Delhi at any given moment. At times, it really becomes difficult to choose what to shoot and what not to shoot.

As for the people, most of them do not mind even if you stick up your lens down their face! But, then there are exceptions all over, I guess.

Good work there Ken!

There are many ways to do this, but, the 'spot healing brush tool' or 'band aid' is by far the easiest and fastest for this type of minute cloning with no close by detail. For more extensive work, you need the 'clone stamp tool':)

@aryan- ur sensor needs a quick shower..

U can use the clone stamp tool if the dirt is spread across an even background. . e.g. Sky, ocean, white backdrop etc. Aryan's foto is a potential candidate.

But if there are lots of detail in the image and is very vivid e.g. streets, scars in portraits, macros etc., then the band-aid (healing tool) works better. Be careful while selecting the brush size.

Lovely shot Ken! Loved the slightly diagonal angle of the horizon and the expression on his face. I guess a bit of levels, brightness/contrast adjustments could have nicely spruced up the main subject. :)

HDR! Good one. Very realistic indeed. But up to the experts to comment on this. Maybe we should start "Your HDR shots" thread!

About my shot, I did do the levels, brightness, contrast, sharpening etc... Maybe you could render it even better. Feel free to do so. That is what a duel is all about. Vikash too my Camel races photograph and put a Subaru there!!! :)

Damn! I saved your pic on my computer in order to try my hands on post processing it and the pic looked so different! The colours look lively and the levels just like I want them to be. On the site, they look dull. Weird stuff?
Some problem with the website?

There's a reason for it.

Ken shoots in the Adobe RGB color space and you can identify this from the _MG_XXXX.jpg file name format of his photos. While Adobe RGB is the preferred color space for profession printing, most internet browsers and do not support this and are optimized for the sRGB color space. When you set up the color space to sRGB on your camera, the files will be named as IMG_XXXX.jpg.

Now, just open up that photo in CS3.... convert color space from Adobe RGB to sRGB and save as a different name jpg. now open both the original photo and the new re saved one in different windows of your browser and see the difference:)

One way of avoiding this is to use a browser like the latest version of firefox. It handles both color profiles equally well:)

Great shot Aryan! Really liking it:)

I would however, crop off a little of the foreground as the tree is too centered vertically..... something like this maybe...

Great composition Aryan! Really liking it:)

You could clean the noise a bit and crop slightly both bottom and top so that the edges of the branch and the slope are at the absolute corners of the photo.

Thanks, both for liking the picture and the tip that you provided.

I wanted to know how do I go about reducing noise in any picture in Adobe Photoshop CS-3? Is there any way to do it in that software, or do I need to procure any specific software for reducing the noise that creeps up in any picture (perhaps because of higher ISO or because of any other reason)?

Any help in this regard would be great Vicky. :)

Install the Noise Ninja plugin for Photoshop. It's the best in the business. Once installed, it acts like any of the other filters like Unsharp Mask, Gaussian Blur, etc etc.
