Olympus has announced the SP-590UZ ultra-zoom digital camera. Trumping Kodak's 24X zoom, the SP-590UZ features a 26X zoom lens that covers a 26-676mm equivalent focal length range. Thankfully there's image stabilization to help prevent camera shake at the long end of the zoom. Like previous recent Olympus UZ cameras, the SP-590UZ can record RAW files.

26x! Damn.. 676mm zoom..My GOD! That's HUGE and to think of it - if any of us plan to get a 600 - 800mm zoom lens (SLR), that would cost a FORTUNE! :D

wow... that's 676mm at f / 5. Pretty nice I should say.
btw, spotted this (http://www.amazon.com/Phoenix-650-2600mm-Telephoto-Digital-Cameras/dp/B000MXRZEO/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2W940YZDRBSZE&colid=2KWUPF47ZMYI7)at approx $250 - should be fun trying out :)

This does look like a bomb. Salient features other than the humongous focal length being the 12MP, 10fps at 3MP and RAW images. Olympus had earlier bridge models coming with RAW as well. Looks like a very good buy at US$450 which is like less than INR 22K.

I guess that the aperture values of Point and shoots (with their tiny sensors) are different from DSLRs (even ones with the crop factor). It something like an f3 on a P&S is an f7 on an entry level DSLR. Read this somewhere, don't remember where though :( Can anyone shed some light on this if it isn't OT?
Oh and yeah, The camera in question sounds real good for wildlife enthusiasts who don't want to spend a bomb on DSLR bodies and telephoto lenses! (Don't wanna start another P&S vs DSLR flame war here, DSLRs are DSLRs afterall :p)

About sensor sizes, was reading though that the sensor size of this one at 1/2.33" is at 73% of sensor size of the G9.

a stupid query ...
what is the basic difference between a dslr and a P&S other than the accuracy of the view(single lens reflex) ?
and how far does this model of olympus go competing with a dslr? can we plugin different lenses on it?

12MP on a 1/2.33" is hugely cramped..
clean images??i think not.
